Author bio
Karina Espinosa is a Colombian-American fantasy author whose books sit where urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and romantasy meet. She was born in New York City, and a lot of her fiction carries that same city energy, fast-moving, sharp-edged, and full of hidden danger. Readers usually know her first for the Mackenzie Grey books, but her catalogue has grown well beyond one heroine or one corner of the supernatural world.
She came to writing as a lifelong reader. Over time, that love of fantasy and paranormal stories turned into a push to create her own worlds, especially worlds built around strong lead characters who have to fight their way through messy magic, ugly politics, and impossible choices.
That impulse shows up early.
Her first published work was Sins of the Fallen, a young adult paranormal series that leans into angels, demons, and Nephilim. Not long after, she launched Shift, the first Mackenzie Grey novel, and that series helped set the tone for much of what followed. Mackenzie is a sarcastic, stubborn werewolf trying to survive pack law, supernatural politics, and her own tangled destiny, and readers clearly connected with her. The series expanded into multiple arcs, including From the Grave, Bloodlust, Queen of the Lycan, and Blood of the Wolf.
Across those books, Espinosa found a lane that fits her well. She likes heroines with bite. She likes worlds where power always comes with a price. And she likes mixing action with emotional fallout, so the big magical battles matter because the characters do.
She has also been happy to switch gears without losing that core style. The Last Valkyrie brings Norse myth into a modern fantasy setting through Raven Romero, a heroine who is messy, tough, and very far from saintly. Phoenix Burn opens a darker trilogy about a woman trying to solve her own murder after surviving it, while the Joey Santana books take on werewolf politics from a new angle in Los Angeles. Even when the setup changes, Espinosa keeps returning to outsiders, found family, old secrets, and women who refuse to stay small.
Then came the newer fantasy worlds.
In A Hint of Delirium and the rest of the Fated Fae Elementals trilogy, she moves into fae courts, elemental power, and a heroine who has spent her life being told not to trust her own mind. Blood Weaver goes bigger, with hidden royalty, blood magic, prophecy, and rival loyalties in a full romantasy frame. Song of the Shadow Prince pushes even further into dragons and portal fantasy, following Cat, a stuntwoman thrown into the dangerous realm of Elaria. These later books still feel like Espinosa, just with wider landscapes and more ornate magical systems.
A few threads connect almost everything she writes. Her protagonists are often women who start on the outside, or people treated like problems before they ever get a fair shot. Her stories are full of supernatural politics, dangerous bargains, strained family ties, and romance that has to survive real pressure. Readers tend to come for the magic and stay for the banter, the tension, and the sense that no victory comes easy.
Outside her novels, Espinosa has described herself as a professor by day and a writer by night. She has taught Composition I, which feels fitting for someone so interested in voice, pace, and getting a story moving quickly. Recent author bios place her in South Florida, where she writes, travels when she can, drinks a lot of coffee, and balances teaching with a steadily growing list of fantasy worlds.
