Mackenzie Grey: Trials Books in Order

Mackenzie Grey: Trials picks up after the earlier revolution-driven part of Mackenzie's story and asks what comes next when the fighting is not really over. She has survived a lot by this point, and people now know her as the Freedom Princess, but that does not mean life gets peaceful. If anything, this arc is about how hard it is to live with the fallout of everything she has already done.

These books, From the Grave, Curse Breaker, Bound by Magic, Stolen Relics, and Bloodlust, lean more into investigation, aftermath, and old problems returning in new forms. Mackenzie is back in New York and still tied to the Supernatural Investigative Unit, so the series often has a case-driven rhythm. That helps distinguish it from the earlier arc. There are villains to track, relics to find, supernatural crimes to untangle, and open wounds that never got the chance to heal.

Her bond with Sebastian stays central, but it is tested in more adult ways here. Secrets, stress, and outside threats keep pressing on the relationship, while Mackenzie is also dealing with destiny, pack expectations, and the cost of always being the person who has to step in. The books do a good job of showing that winning one war does not fix the person who had to fight it.

The past keeps showing up anyway.

There is also a broader sense that Mackenzie is moving toward another transformation, not just in power, but in identity. Questions about family, lineage, and responsibility keep surfacing. So do the practical burdens of leadership, even when she does not want to think of herself that way. Later books bring in legendary objects, blood-driven danger, and sharper supernatural threats, but they still keep one foot in detective-style urban fantasy.

If Origins is about Mackenzie discovering the world and surviving it, Trials is about living with what she has become. It is still full of danger, sarcasm, and paranormal politics, but the emotional center is more seasoned. Readers who like urban fantasy series once the heroine is already scarred, capable, and still not done paying the price will probably enjoy this arc a lot.
