Karen Thompson Walker was born and raised in San Diego, California. She studied English and creative writing at UCLA, then went on to earn an MFA from Columbia. Before publishing her own fiction, she worked in journalism and in book publishing, two jobs that seem to fit the kind of writer she became, observant, patient, and very interested in how ordinary life can tilt into something strange.

One of the turning points in her writing life came from a tiny fact in a news story. She read that the 2004 earthquake in Indonesia had affected the earth's rotation by a few microseconds, and the idea stuck. What began as a short story kept growing. While working as an editor at Simon & Schuster, she wrote in the mornings before work and sometimes on the subway, slowly building the novel that would become The Age of Miracles.

Her fiction often starts with one unnerving question.

The Age of Miracles, her debut, follows eleven-year-old Julia as the earth's rotation begins to slow and daily life in California starts to come apart. The novel became a New York Times bestseller and was translated into many languages, but what tends to stay with readers is its scale. Walker is writing about a planetary crisis, yes, but also about lunch tables, first love, a shaky marriage, and the lonely, watchful feeling of early adolescence. She makes the end of the world feel intimate.

Her second novel, The Dreamers, returns to California, this time to a college town overtaken by a mysterious sleeping sickness. Students, parents, doctors, and children all get pulled into the crisis as the town moves toward quarantine. The book was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, and it shows why people come back to Walker's work. She is drawn to fear and uncertainty, but she never loses sight of tenderness, community, or the odd beauty of people trying to care for one another under pressure.

Fear matters in her work, but it is never the whole story.

That balance is there again in The Strange Case of Jane O., a speculative mystery set in New York City. The novel follows a psychiatrist trying to understand a young mother whose blackouts, visions, and missing time refuse any neat explanation. For this book, Walker drew on research into memory, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and clinical case histories. The result is a story that moves like a mystery while also asking harder questions about grief, identity, and what makes a life feel real.

Across all three novels, you can see the patterns that interest her most. Time slips. Memory bends. The natural world or the known world shifts just enough to expose how fragile everyday routines really are. Walker often writes about children, parents, and families, and about the distance between private fear and public crisis. Her books are speculative, but they stay grounded in the texture of normal life, which is part of what makes their stranger elements land so hard.

She also has a strong feel for setting. California appears often, not as a glossy backdrop but as a place where sunlight, unease, and instability can exist side by side. Even when she moves to New York, the same approach holds: real streets, real work, real relationships, then one impossible fact that changes the angle of everything.

Today, Walker is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Oregon. She lives in Portland with her husband, the novelist Casey Walker, and their two daughters.
