Author bio
Tess Thompson grew up in a small town in southern Oregon, and that background shows up again and again in her fiction. Rivers, mountains, close communities, old hurts, second chances, all of that feels lived-in in her books rather than borrowed. She writes about people whose lives have already gotten messy by the time the story starts.
She knows small towns from the inside.
Before she became a novelist, she studied theater at the University of Southern California's drama school and once planned on an acting career. That early interest in performance still seems to shape the way she builds scenes and dialogue. But somewhere along the way, writing became the thing that stuck, and it gave her room to create the kinds of emotional, character-led stories she wanted to tell.
Her books move between contemporary romance and historical romance, but the emotional core stays pretty steady. In novels like Riversong and Traded: Brody and Kara, readers get women rebuilding after loss, danger, or heartbreak, often in small towns that offer both shelter and complication. In The School Mistress, she shifts to Edwardian Colorado and opens up the wide family saga that runs through the Emerson Pass historicals. And in The Sugar Queen and The Making of a Matchmaker, you can see how much she enjoys pairing romance with family drama, secrets, and a little mystery.
That mix is a big part of her appeal.
Readers who pick up Tess Thompson usually know what they want, warmth, heart, community, and people worth rooting for. But her stories are rarely soft in a weightless way. She writes about grief, betrayal, abuse, war, class pressure, family strain, and the long shadow of old decisions. Even so, her books tend to move toward hope. There is often a town to come home to, a family to rebuild, or a love story that asks whether damaged people can still make something good together.
Certain patterns turn up often. She likes found family. She likes widows, widowers, single parents, women starting over, and men who look steady on the outside but are carrying more than they say. She also likes a setting that matters. Whether it is a coastal California town, a Colorado mountain community, a ranch in Montana, or a holiday village full of Christmas lights, place is never just wallpaper in her work.
Away from the page, she has long made her home in the Seattle area. She writes from there with the support of her husband Cliff, and she has spoken warmly about their blended family, her daughters Emerson and Ella, and the cats that keep her company while she works. Those family details show up around the edges of her brand too, especially in the names of series and the personal tone she brings to talking with readers.
What comes through most clearly is that she likes stories about repair. Not perfect lives, not perfect people, just people trying again. That makes her bibliography easy to browse by mood. You can go contemporary or historical, Christmas-heavy or family-saga heavy, but the through line stays familiar: home, heart, and another shot at love.
