Author bio

Karen Kingsbury was born on June 8, 1963, in Fairfax, Virginia, and she grew up in California. She is best known today for contemporary inspirational novels that put family and faith in the middle of the story, without pretending life is simple. The romances are clean, but the feelings are big, and redemption is always part of the journey.

She studied journalism at California State University, Northridge, and went into newspaper reporting. Before she was writing novels, she was writing about real people, covering sports and then moving into feature stories that landed on the front page. Her first book, Missy’s Murder, came out of a story she covered as a reporter, a true-crime account of the murder of teenager Michele “Missy” Avila, and it became a turning point in her career.

Then the fiction took over.

Over the years, Kingsbury has written more than 50 novels, and many of them have been bestsellers, with tens of millions of copies in print. The Baxter books, which begin with Redemption, are the best-known backbone of her catalog, following a close-knit family through marriage struggles, parenting, adoption, grief, and reconciliation, one life-changing choice at a time. Her chapters tend to be quick and scene-driven, which keeps the pages turning even when the story is doing heavy emotional work.

She also writes outside the Baxters. The September 11 trilogy starts with One Tuesday Morning and follows characters living with grief, identity questions, and the long aftermath of tragedy. The Cody Gunner books, beginning with A Thousand Tomorrows, bring romance into the rodeo world, with big feelings and real consequences. And books like The Bridge and The Chance lean into second chances, the kind that arrive after you have stopped expecting them.

Kingsbury’s themes tend to circle back to the same things: home, belonging, and the moment when a person has to decide who they are going to be. Her settings range from small-town family life to Hollywood storylines and sports-driven plots, but the heartbeat is usually relational. People hurt each other, then they have to decide what they will do next.

Hope is never treated like a shortcut.

She has also written devotionals and books for younger readers, including picture books like To the Moon and Back, along with Bible-era novels such as The Family of Jesus. That range is part of why longtime readers can stay with her work for years, there is often a next book that fits a new season of life.

On the personal side, Kingsbury is married to Donald Kingsbury, and they have six children, including three adopted sons from Haiti. Family life is not just a background detail for her, it is part of the lens through which she writes about love, loss, and the decision to keep showing up.

Some of her stories have been adapted for the screen, including a film version of Like Dandelion Dust and the television series The Baxters. But the core appeal of her books is still simple: they are built for readers who want hope without pretending life is easy.
