Series background & context

Above the Line is Karen Kingsbury’s Hollywood series, built around two friends who want to make movies without losing their souls. It is set in an industry that runs on image and compromise, so the tension often comes from a simple question: what do you do when the “right” choice costs you everything you worked for?

The series follows producers Chase Ryan and Keith Ellison through four books, Take One, Take Two, Take Three, and Take Four. Their partnership is the backbone, but the story also makes room for romance, family relationships, and the people who get pulled into their world as projects grow bigger and pressure gets louder.

This is not a glamorous Hollywood fantasy.

Kingsbury uses film sets, agents, and studio politics as the backdrop, but the heart of the series is character-driven. Chase and Keith face temptation, public scrutiny, and the kind of professional decisions that can turn into personal failures. Their faith is not a prop, it is the thing that gets tested when money and ego enter the room.

Each book builds on the last, so reading in order matters. You will see the consequences of earlier choices show up later, and you will also see how small acts of integrity can change a whole team’s direction over time.

If you want a Kingsbury series with a different setting than the Midwest family novels, Above the Line is an easy shift. It still delivers her familiar themes, redemption, forgiveness, hope, but in a world where the spotlight can be both opportunity and danger.
