Author bio

K.A. Tucker grew up in small-town Ontario, and books were part of her life early. She has said her first book was made when she was six, with help from an elementary school librarian and a box of crayons.

That sounds like a pretty clear origin story.

Writing did not become her full-time path right away, though. Like plenty of people, she moved through a long list of possible futures, teacher, doctor, even pathologist, before landing in business and working in sales and marketing. The turn back to fiction came years later, when she was home on maternity leave with her second child and needed a mental escape. She started writing seriously in the cracks of real life, often at night after the kids were asleep.

Her early books were young adult fantasy, including Anathema and the rest of the Causal Enchantment series. Then Ten Tiny Breaths arrived in 2012 and changed the scale of her career. The novel found a big audience as a self-published book, and a traditional deal followed soon after. From there, Tucker kept building, book by book, instead of staying boxed into one corner of the market.

She has never seemed very interested in picking just one lane.

Some readers come to her for emotionally heavy new adult romance, especially Ten Tiny Breaths and its connected books. Others like the suspense thread running through novels like Burying Water, He Will Be My Ruin, and Keep Her Safe. And for a lot of people, The Simple Wild is the gateway book, the one that shows how well she can balance romance with family tension, grief, humor, and a setting that feels alive on the page.

She also writes fantasy, and not in a halfhearted side-project way. A Fate of Wrath and Flame opens the Fate & Flame series with portal fantasy, magic, and a slow-burn romance, showing the same interest in emotional pressure that runs through her contemporary work. That range is part of what makes her bibliography fun to explore. You can start with an Alaska love story, detour into a dark suspense plot, and end up in a kingdom full of rival thrones and prophecy, and it still feels like the same author is holding the wheel.

Across genres, a few things keep showing up. Tucker likes women who are starting over, carrying secrets, or trying to outrun old versions of themselves. She likes pressure. She likes chemistry with complications. And she tends to place her characters in settings that matter, rural Alaska, small-town Oregon, Dublin, Miami, Manhattan, because place in her books is rarely just wallpaper.

These stories may shift in genre, but they usually stay close to the same human questions: Who do you trust? What do you do with guilt? How much of your past can you bury before it pushes back?

Tucker now lives in a small town outside Toronto with her husband and two daughters. On her website and author bios, she comes across as funny and unpretentious, the kind of writer who will admit she reads recipes she will never make and spends time chasing rabbits away from her hostas. That mix of ordinary life and high emotional stakes fits her books pretty well.
