Just Ask Reeves is built around one of the most appealing secondary characters in Karen Hawkins's historical romances: an unflappable butler who is much smarter than almost everyone around him. The setup begins when a dying earl decides to legitimize his wild sons and leave Reeves with the impossible task of making them fit for society.

In Her Master and Commander, Reeves turns his attention to Tristan Llevanth, a wounded naval hero and former pirate who has no interest in becoming respectable. The result is part makeover story, part neighbor feud, part reluctant healing.

Her Officer and Gentleman picks up the thread with Christian Llevanth, a man known for danger before a title lands on his head. Lady Elizabeth, who has built a careful life around books and duty, becomes the woman most likely to upset whatever plan he thinks he has. The series keeps its focus tight, but the inheritance plot gives both books a shared frame and a reason for Reeves to keep quietly pulling strings.

The tone here is a little different from Hawkins's bigger clan or artifact series. The scale is smaller, and much of the pleasure comes from watching untidy men forced into polished rooms, formal expectations, and romantic situations they are not equipped to handle. Reeves acts as strategist, fixer, and occasional chaos manager, which gives the books their personality.

If you like historical romance with a strong household element, this series hits that note well. There are titles and fortunes at stake, but there are also fences, drawing rooms, old wounds, and the practical question of whether a man can be taught to act like a gentleman after years of doing exactly as he pleases.
