Author bio
Julie Cohen grew up in the western mountains of Maine, in a small paper mill town with the library just up the hill from her house. She has said she spent a lot of her childhood walking that route with her nose in a book, already dreaming about what it might feel like to see one of her own novels on those shelves.
She started early.
At eleven, she wrote her first novel by hand in a spiral notebook, complete with maps and illustrations, about a girl wizard. That mix of story, play, and stubborn determination still feels very close to the way her books work now. Even when the ideas get big, the emotional pull stays personal.
Cohen studied English literature at Brown University and later at Cambridge, then went on to postgraduate research on fairies in nineteenth-century children's literature. After moving to the UK, she taught secondary school English for a time. That background shows up in her fiction in a quiet way. She is interested in language, but even more in the things people do not quite say.
Getting published did not happen overnight. She has written about the years of rejection before she broke in through romance for Harlequin Mills & Boon. Those early books gave her a strong feel for pace, chemistry, and emotional timing, and you can still see that engine running beneath her later novels.
That long apprenticeship paid off.
Her readership widened with books such as Dear Thing, a story of infertility, friendship, surrogacy, and the emotional fallout none of the characters can neatly control. Together asks what people will sacrifice for love, while Louis & Louise plays with gender, fate, and the different roads one life can take. In Spirited, she moved into historical fiction, using photography, grief, spiritualism, and desire to explore the lives of women pushing against the limits of their age.
Readers often come to Julie Cohen for the knot at the center of the story. She likes love, of course, but also secrecy, family pressure, second chances, grief, reinvention, and questions of identity. Her settings move between England and Maine, and even when the premise is inventive, the feelings are recognisable. People in her books make mistakes, keep things hidden, want the wrong person, and try very hard to become someone braver.
She also writes darker feminist thrillers under the name Julie Mae Cohen.
Outside the novels, she teaches creative writing and has mentored many other writers through workshops and her own consultancy work. She is a founder member of the Romantic Novelists' Association Rainbow Chapter for LGBTQIA+ writers, has been recognised for her work supporting inclusion in romantic fiction, and is a patron of a Berkshire literacy charity that helps children learn to read. Her books have been translated widely, sold more than a million copies, and some have been optioned for film and television.
These days she lives in Berkshire with her teenager and dog. She has said that she still brings a copy of each new book back to the Rumford Public Library, which is a lovely full-circle detail for a writer who began as a kid in Maine, walking uphill toward the shelves she hoped to join one day.
