Author bio
Jeffrey Cohen was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Irvington. That Garden State upbringing matters because so much of his fiction feels local in the best way, full of shore towns, suburbs, everyday jobs, and people who sound like they have known one another too long.
After attending Rutgers College in New Brunswick, he went into writing the working way, by doing it anywhere he could. He worked as a newspaper reporter and later as a freelance writer, teacher, magazine editor, and screenwriter. His byline appeared in places like The New York Times, USA Weekend, Entertainment Weekly, American Baby, Premiere, and Writer's Digest.
He came to novels by way of a screenplay that would not behave.
That stubborn idea became For Whom the Minivan Rolls in 2002, the first Aaron Tucker mystery. Aaron is a work-at-home dad, freelance writer, and extremely reluctant sleuth, which tells you a lot about Cohen's instincts as a novelist. He likes ordinary people with chores, marriages, kids, and deadlines who keep getting dragged into crimes they never wanted to solve. The Aaron Tucker run continued with A Farewell to Legs and As Dog Is My Witness, and the short story The Gun Also Rises later won the Barry Award.
He stayed with that comic mystery approach in the Double Feature books, beginning with Some Like It Hot-Buttered, where movie theater owner Elliot Freed investigates murder in and around his comedy-only cinema. Under the name E.J. Copperman, he widened the frame and got stranger. Night of the Living Deed opens the Haunted Guesthouse series with a Jersey Shore inn, two opinionated ghosts, and a heroine who would really prefer not to become a detective.
From there he kept testing how elastic a cozy mystery could be. Written Off begins when a mystery writer gets a call from the detective she invented. Dog Dish of Doom makes an animal talent agent the center of a murder case. Inherit the Shoes sends prosecutor Sandy Moss from New Jersey to Los Angeles and drops her into legal chaos with actors, divorce battles, and murder charges.
Even his oddest premises stay anchored in character.
That is why readers who like him tend to stay with him. The jokes are there, but so are family friction, work trouble, money worries, and the small embarrassments of ordinary life. Later books like The Question of the Missing Head, Ukulele of Death, and All Spooked Up all use unusual setups, but the real hook is watching smart, tired, funny people keep their balance when the world gets weird.
His nonfiction comes from an equally personal place. The Asperger Parent and Guns A' Blazing grew out of his experience raising a son diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, and both books focus less on abstract theory than on what parents and schools actually do, fear, misunderstand, and learn. That plainspoken, human scale carries into the fiction too. Even when Cohen is writing ghosts, impossible detectives, or not-quite-human investigators, he is still interested in how people live with one another.
New Jersey is the throughline. Whether he is writing about suburban parents, storefront offices, movie houses, shore-town guesthouses, or lawyers who cannot quite escape home, Cohen keeps coming back to the state he knows best. These days he continues to write under both Jeffrey Cohen and E.J. Copperman, and he has said that in his spare time he plays guitar badly, follows Major League Baseball, watches too much television, and works crossword puzzles.
