Author bio

Joseph F. Girzone was a Catholic priest and writer whose books returned again and again to the same plain idea: love, forgiveness, and compassion matter in everyday life. He was born in Albany, New York, on May 15, 1930, the oldest of twelve children born to Peter and Margaret Girzone. His father was a butcher, and money was often tight.

His childhood included a painful family eviction, an experience that stayed with him and helped shape his concern for people who were struggling. As a young man, he entered the Carmelite Order and was ordained a priest in 1955. He later became a diocesan priest in the Albany area, serving parishes and working with older residents and local community groups.

He cared a lot about the practical side of faith.

Girzone helped push for services for older people in Montgomery County, and he also taught, gave talks, and organized retreats. But serious health problems changed the course of his life. In 1981, a heart condition and other illness forced him to retire from active ministry.

Retirement gave him time to write. He had already published Gloria: A Diary and Who Will Teach Me?, but his breakthrough came with Joshua in 1983. The novel imagines a quiet carpenter arriving in a contemporary small town, where his kindness, insight, and unusual presence unsettle as many people as they help.

Publishers initially turned the book down, so Girzone started his own small press and sold copies himself, carrying boxes in his car. Readers found the book anyway. A wider paperback release followed, and Joshua grew into a series that included Joshua and the Children, Joshua in the Holy Land, Joshua and the City, and Joshua's Family.

The books are modern Christian parables rather than theological arguments. Joshua meets suspicion, violence, prejudice, fear, and institutions that have forgotten the people they are meant to serve. Girzone kept the language direct and the moral questions close to daily life. That same approach runs through his nonfiction, including Never Alone, A Portrait of Jesus, My Struggle with Faith, and The End of Suffering.

He also wrote for younger readers, reflected on parenting and prayer, and told the true story of his godson in Joey. The 2002 film Joshua brought the central story to another audience, while Girzone continued speaking and leading spiritual programs.

In 1995, he founded the Joshua Foundation at his property in Altamont, New York. Through it, he supported local charitable work and created space for retreats and spiritual conversations.

Girzone died in Albany on November 29, 2015, at age eighty-five. His later books and collections of daily reflections have kept his simple, people-first approach to faith in circulation.
