Johnny Delgado: Private Detective Books in Order

The Johnny Delgado books take Kevin Brooks's love of crime fiction and strip it down to something fast, direct, and street-level. Johnny is a teenager living with his mother on the Foster Estate, a hard place where gangs, grudges, and bad decisions are part of daily life. In Like Father, Like Son, the scale gets bigger and more personal. A gang war is brewing on the estate, and Johnny becomes obsessed with finding out who killed his father and why. That question hangs over the series. Johnny is not just trying to solve cases for the thrill of it. He is trying to make sense of the violence around him, and of the hole that violence has left in his own family.

These are short books, written in a lean, punchy style, and they do not waste time. The chapters are brief. The tension arrives early. The language is clear without feeling flat. Kevin Brooks gives the stories a noir shape, but keeps them rooted in teenage confusion, bluff, loyalty, and fear. Johnny talks tough, thinks fast, and makes mistakes that feel believable for a kid trying to act older than he is.

He is not a super-sleuth.

That is what makes the series work. Johnny solves problems by asking questions, pushing his luck, reading people as best he can, and relying on a few decent people in a place that often feels stacked against him.
