Travis Delaney Investigates Books in Order

The Travis Delaney books are Kevin Brooks writing for slightly younger readers, but the setup is still built on grief, suspicion, and danger. Travis is fourteen when his parents, who ran Delaney & Co, die in a car crash. The police call it an accident. Travis does not believe them, and that doubt becomes the engine for the whole series.

He starts digging almost at once.

In The Ultimate Truth, Travis looks into the last case his parents were working on, the disappearance of a boy whose family insists he is not missing. That question is strange enough on its own, but things get worse when a man who appears in his parents' surveillance photos turns up at their funeral. What begins as a way for Travis to cope with loss turns into a real investigation, and then into a deeper fear that his parents may have been murdered.

The Danger Game widens the world. Travis is trying to settle back into something like ordinary life while his grandfather keeps the family agency going, but trouble does not stay small for long. His investigation into thefts at school overlaps with an attack on his partner Courtney, and suddenly he is dealing with gang warfare, dirty police, secret organisations, and the growing possibility that someone close to him cannot be trusted.

By The Snake Trap, the story has become even more dangerous. Travis is caught in an armed crisis at the agency offices, then abducted, and the hunt for answers about his parents' deaths becomes impossible to separate from questions about loyalty, survival, and who deserves to be saved. Across the trilogy, Brooks keeps feeding the same central mystery while still giving each book its own immediate problem to solve.

What makes the series work is the balance. The books are fast and readable, but they never feel childish. Travis is young, yet the stakes around him are real. He is brave, grieving, stubborn, and often in over his head, which makes him easy to root for. The detective work is clear enough to follow, the action moves quickly, and the emotional thread, especially Travis's need to understand what happened to his parents, gives the whole series a strong pull.

If you want Kevin Brooks at his most accessible, but still tense, this is a very good place to begin.
