John L. Campbell was born in Chicago, and he has also described himself as having lived in different parts of the United States. He later attended college in North Carolina and New York. Before he built a career in fiction, he worked an unusually varied run of jobs, including store detective, investigator, bouncer, and limousine driver.

That kind of background feels close to the ground, and so do his books. His stories tend to throw ordinary people, and sometimes very dangerous people, into extreme situations where panic, violence, and bad luck all arrive at once.

He came up through short fiction first.

Before the novels, Campbell's work appeared in anthologies, literary magazines, and online ezines. He also published shorter horror fiction in book form, including the collections Red Circus and In The Falling Light, plus the novella The Mangroves, a wartime horror story based on events tied to Ramree Island in 1945.

His best known work is the Omega Days sequence, which begins with Omega Days and continues through Ship of the Dead, Drifters, Crossbones, and later entries. The series starts in the San Francisco Bay Area and follows a large, shifting cast through a zombie outbreak that gets worse, stranger, and more brutal as it spreads. Readers who connect with these books usually point to the scale of the disaster, the ensemble cast, and the feeling that nobody is ever quite safe.

Campbell's horror is not limited to zombies. Cannibal Kingdom is a global outbreak novel with a political and military frame, while A Judge from Salem moves into historical supernatural horror. That novel was published under the pen name Atticus Wulf, along with A Cruel and Bitter Nothing. Taken together, those books show how comfortably he moves between apocalyptic horror, historical dread, and shorter dark fiction.

A few themes keep showing up across his work. He likes survival stories, groups under pressure, and the moment when fear makes people reveal who they really are. His settings matter too, whether that means a collapsing Bay Area, a snowbound mountain route, or a Puritan town sliding into fanaticism. Even in the middle of action scenes, he keeps a close eye on character.

His shorter fiction brought some recognition as well. In 2013, his story Courageous Little Philomena's Wondrous Bait was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and in 2014 he served as a juror for the Bram Stoker Awards. He has also been associated with both the Horror Writers Association and International Thriller Writers, and he has been active on the horror and comic convention circuit.

There are a couple of biographical details that fit his fiction almost too neatly. He has studied kendo and has had professional training in interrogation. Public author biographies have also placed him in the New York area with his family, where he has continued working on new fiction.
