Author bio

Joe Clifford grew up in Berlin, Connecticut, and left New England for San Francisco when he was young, chasing music and a bigger life. What he found instead was the long, hard detour that would later shape almost everything he wrote.

It did not go the way he planned.

Clifford has been very open about spending much of the 1990s homeless and addicted to heroin in San Francisco. After hitting bottom, he got sober, went back to school through a program that helped people in recovery, and started rebuilding his life in a more ordinary, durable way.

That rebuilding eventually led him to writing in earnest. He studied creative writing, earned an MFA from Florida International University in 2008, and later returned to the Bay Area. His memoir Junkie Love came out of that period and looks straight at the years he nearly lost.

It is a rough book, and that is part of why it works.

In Junkie Love, Clifford writes about drugs, hustling, bad luck, bad choices, and the small acts of grace that keep people alive. Readers who connect with it usually mention the same thing: he does not clean the story up. The book is blunt about wreckage, but it is also funny in spots, alert to friendship, and honest about recovery as a slow process rather than a neat ending.

Then he turned to crime fiction, which suits him almost too well. Lamentation introduced Jay Porter, a stubborn New Hampshire outsider with a talent for finding trouble, and December Boys, Give Up the Dead, Broken Ground, and Rag and Bone kept widening Jay's world. Those books brought Clifford award attention, but more importantly they gave him a space to write about family loyalty, addiction, class, and the way small towns bury their damage.

His standalones keep pushing those same interests into new shapes. The One That Got Away follows a survivor forced back into old trauma. The Lakehouse turns a quiet Connecticut town into a knot of suspicion and buried history. The Shadow People leans into paranoia and horror, while Say My Name, All Who Wander, and A Moth to Flame play with memory, disappearance, and the stories people tell to survive.

Across the books, certain things come up again and again. Brothers. Missing people. People on the edge of respectable society. New England winters, bad roads, secrets in plain sight. Even when the plots get twistier, Clifford tends to stay interested in the same basic question: what do damaged people owe each other, and what happens when they fail?

He has also worked as an editor, putting together crime anthologies inspired by Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash, and he teaches online writing courses for Florida International University. He has said he lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Justine, and their two sons. After everything that came before, that ordinary detail feels earned.
