Author bio
Joanne DeMaio writes contemporary fiction rooted in small towns, coastal roads and the quiet turning points that reshape a life. She lives in Connecticut with her family and writes full-time, often drawing on the rhythms of New England seasons and shorelines.
Her debut novel, Whole Latte Life, introduced many of the elements readers now associate with her work, from deep female friendships to midlife reinvention. The book went on to win a major competition at BookExpo America and was named a Critics’ Pick by Kirkus Reviews, helping launch her into a wider audience.
Before long she found herself returning, on the page, to a stretch of Connecticut shoreline and a circle of longtime friends. That impulse became Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans, a summer story about college friends reuniting in a beach town. The novel spent two summers on the New York Times bestseller list and quietly set the stage for what would become her signature project.
That project is The Seaside Saga, a long-running series that follows the same cast of beach friends through marriages, losses, homecomings and hard choices in the fictional town of Stony Point. The books read a bit like an ongoing TV drama, each picking up where the last one leaves off. At the center are familiar figures like coastal architect Jason Barlow, denim designer Maris, lobsterman Shane, innkeeper Elsa and others whose lives keep tangling in new ways.
DeMaio balances that sea-swept saga with a different kind of series, her Winter novels. Beginning with Snowflakes and Coffee Cakes, a USA Today bestseller, these stories take place in a snow-dusted New England town filled with lakeside cabins, village greens and holiday traditions. They often circle around people who are starting over, whether that means rebuilding a home, a romance or a sense of belonging.
Standalone novels like True Blend and the two-part The Beach Cottage duet show another side of her writing. Those books still feature porches, coffee, country roads and the pull of the sea, but they focus on a single pivotal season in one household, asking what happens when an ordinary life is knocked slightly off its axis.
Across all of these stories, certain threads repeat. DeMaio likes to write about friendship that lasts longer than a crisis, about family ties that are complicated but worth the work, and about the small pleasures that get people through hard days, whether it is a walk by the water or a late-night cup of coffee.
When she talks about her process, she often mentions early-morning writing sessions, long walks, and visits to real New England towns and shorelines that echo through her fictional settings. A favorite hometown fountain even helped inspire the wishing fountain that appears in her novel True Blend.
Today she continues to expand The Seaside Saga, add to her Winter novels, and revisit readers’ favorite characters in new seasons of their lives. She keeps the tone intimate and down-to-earth, inviting readers not just to sample a single book, but to settle in with a whole fictional community over time.
