Series background & context

The Seaside Saga is Joanne DeMaio’s long, unfolding story about a tight-knit group of friends anchored to a New England beach town. The series begins when designer Maris Carrington returns to Stony Point, Connecticut, and over time it grows into a many-book chronicle of love, loss and second chances by the sea.

Stony Point itself is one of the series’ main characters. There are shingled cottages on the bluff, weathered guesthouses tucked along sandy lanes, a boarded-up beach hangout, and a boardwalk that looks out over Long Island Sound. Readers return to the same stretch of shore in every book, watching the seasons change from clam-shack summers to quiet, windswept winters.

At the heart of the saga is coastal architect Jason Barlow, who lives with the physical and emotional scars of a past accident, and Maris, a denim designer whose trip home in Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans reshapes her future. Around them move lobsterman Shane Bradford, musicians, innkeepers, restaurant owners, veterans, teenagers growing into adults and older locals who have seen the town through decades of tides.

Each novel picks up almost exactly where the previous one ends, often right after a cliffhanger moment. That structure makes the series feel less like separate stand-alone books and more like episodes in a continuous TV drama. A wedding planned in one volume might play out in the next; a single impulsive decision on the boardwalk can ripple through several books before the full cost is clear.

Along the way, different corners of Stony Point come into focus. One book centers on a grand beach inn that may or may not be sold. Another brings the last-standing cottage on the sand into the spotlight, along with the secrets weathered into its gray shingles. Later installments follow Shane into a rented bungalow, trace the fate of a hidden stairway cut into the bluff, or linger over the lives unfolding on Shore Road.

Though the series is cozy in the sense that readers grow familiar with the town and its rituals, the emotional stakes are real. Characters grapple with grief, financial strain, fractured marriages, family estrangements and the quiet, stubborn work of forgiveness. There is romance, but there are also friendships that stretch back to childhood, and choices that carry consequences for a whole circle of people.

For new readers, The Seaside Saga is best experienced in order, starting with Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans and moving through each numbered title. Read that way, it offers the pleasure of settling into a seaside community and watching its people change over years rather than chapters, all against the constant backdrop of waves, dunes and salt air.
