Author bio
Joanna Shupe writes historical romance with one eye on the glitter and the other on what it cost. Her books are best known for turning Gilded Age New York into a living place, full of money, hunger, ambition, and desire. She lives in suburban New Jersey with her husband and two daughters, close enough to New York City to keep feeding the research habit that shapes so much of her work.
History got to her early.
She has said the spark goes back to a Schoolhouse Rock! cartoon and a childhood already full of books. She grew up reading mysteries, then found her grandmother's romance novels around twelve and tore through them, especially Johanna Lindsey. In fourth grade she recited the Gettysburg Address for her whole elementary school, which feels like a pretty good clue about where this was heading.
In college, she studied journalism and expected a future in sports journalism. Writing fiction came later. After graduation, her older sister dared her to write a romance novel, and she discovered she loved the mix of emotion, structure, and sheer fun that the genre allowed. That dare eventually turned into a career.
Her published career began with English-set historicals like The Courtesan Duchess, The Harlot Countess, and The Lady Hellion. Even in those early books, you can see what she likes: bold heroines, hidden identities, strong sexual tension, and plots where reputation is never a small thing. The stories move quickly, but they also pay attention to the narrow choices women had and the clever ways they pushed back.
Then New York took over. Shupe has said she became obsessed with the Gilded Age after reading The Age of Innocence as a teenager. After college she lived in Chicago, then moved to New York and stayed in the area, which made research trips easy. That city became the beating heart of books like The Rogue of Fifth Avenue, The Prince of Broadway, The Devil of Downtown, The Heiress Hunt, and The Duke Gets Even. Readers come for the gowns, mansions, and heat, but they tend to stay for the way she writes class friction, social rules, and women who want more than a good marriage.
She likes putting love stories where money and power are loud.
That shows up again and again. Some of her heroines want work, some want freedom, some want pleasure without punishment, and some are just tired of being managed. Her heroes may be dukes, financiers, lawyers, gang leaders, or newspaper barons, but they usually meet women who will not stay in the role assigned to them. Books like Magnate and A Scandalous Deal lean into business and ambition. The Gilded Heiress adds a fairy-tale angle to working-class New York. The Gilded Rose goes darker, using a Beauty and the Beast frame to explore survival and escape.
Along the way, the success has become pretty visible in plain, solid ways. She won the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award in 2013, and her books have landed on yearly best-of lists since 2015. She is also a USA Today bestselling author. During the pandemic, a fever-dream idea pushed her into darker contemporary romance under the pen name Mila Finelli, starting with Mafia Mistress and growing into a second branch of her career.
These days she still seems happiest at the meeting point of story and research. She has talked about loving sports and reading, and she has admitted she will never turn down a novelty donut. That sounds about right. Her books may be full of grand houses and dangerous men, but the person behind them comes across as practical, curious, and clearly having a good time.
