Series background & context

Jewel Island is one of Holly Martin’s most vivid creations, a jewel toned island off the Cornish coast where waterfalls tumble into hidden coves, markets spill onto the harbour front and a family run hotel sits at the heart of it all. The series follows the Philips sisters and the people who wash up on their shores looking for a fresh start.

The story begins with Sunrise over Sapphire Bay. After their father’s death, Aria Philips is determined to keep the family’s slightly faded Sapphire Bay Hotel open on Jewel Island. She is juggling renovations, bookings and an overworked staff when hotel fixer Noah Campbell arrives. He has a reputation for turning struggling hotels around. His job is to make hard decisions. Aria fears that might include selling the place she calls home. Their professional clashes are threaded with growing attraction as they work out whether they can save both the business and their relationship.

In Autumn Skies Over Ruby Falls the focus moves to Clover, one of Aria’s sisters. Back on the island after a painful betrayal in London, she teaches dance classes at the hotel but refuses to let anyone close romantically. Enter Angel Mazzeo, a charming chef whose easy smile hides his own scars. They agree on a casual fling to help Clover regain her confidence, only to find that easy boundaries are hard to keep when every moment together feels significant.

Ice Creams at Emerald Cove tells Skye’s story. She and Jesse Hamilton have a complicated history as neighbours, best friends and, briefly, husband and wife. Now Skye is rooted on Jewel Island, helping run the hotel and a new ice cream parlour, while Jesse’s life is in Canada. When he returns for the island’s famous Pudding Parade, they have to decide whether their relationship will stay stuck in the past or finally move forward.

Later books, including Sunlight over Crystal Sands and Mistletoe at Moonstone Lake, broaden the cast with new arrivals who fall for both the island and its residents. Artists, wanderers and visitors arrive in the height of summer or into the glow of the Christmas market, each bringing a different lens on Jewel Island’s beaches, woodland walks and tumbling waterfalls.

Throughout the series the island itself is a constant. There are cliff paths lined with wildflowers, hidden coves that lend themselves to midnight swims, and cosy corners of the hotel where confessions and proposals take place. Festivals and seasonal events give each book its own flavour, from autumn fireworks to festive markets under strings of lights.

Jewel Island is made for readers who enjoy ensemble casts, recurring family dynamics and the comforting sense of returning to the same place while watching new couples find their way.
