Author bio
Jennifer Chiaverini grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a house where stories and library books were part of everyday life. As a girl she read widely, but one slim novel about a magical spring, Tuck Everlasting, lingered with her and nudged her toward becoming a writer herself.
In college she studied English at the University of Notre Dame, then went on to earn a master’s degree in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. Along the way she fell in love with historical fiction, nineteenth century women novelists, and the kind of archival research that sends you chasing a single footnote through hours of reading. She later taught writing and literature at Penn State and Edgewood College, helping students find their own voices on the page.
Quilting did not arrive in her life until her mid twenties, shortly after she married. She wanted a wedding quilt, something handmade and lasting, but no one in her family quilted and buying one was out of reach. The only answer was to learn. She picked up a rotary cutter and needle, joined the world of quilt shops and guild meetings, and discovered how generous quilters could be with their time, patterns, and hard‑won tricks.
That mix of storytelling and shared craft became the seed of The Quilter’s Apprentice, her debut novel. In it, an older master quilter and a younger woman piece together both fabric and family history inside a Pennsylvania manor house. What began as a single book grew into the Elm Creek Quilts series, with quilters gathering at a retreat to swap techniques, tell stories, and quietly rebuild their lives.
Across those books, Chiaverini often lets a single quilt carry the weight of memory. Blocks stitched in one century reappear in another. A log cabin top whispers of the Underground Railroad. A sampler sewn in wartime travels from hand to hand, binding together women who might never have met otherwise. The series is part family saga, part friendship story, and part love letter to a traditional art that keeps evolving.
As her career widened, she also began writing quilt pattern collections that let readers sew the pieces they had only imagined on the page. Books like Elm Creek Quilts, More Elm Creek Quilts, Traditions from Elm Creek Quilts, and Harriet’s Journey from Elm Creek Quilts pair instructions with character sketches and behind the scenes notes from the novels. For many readers, the patterns are a bridge between reading and making.
Beyond Elm Creek, Chiaverini has written a shelf of standalone historical novels that lift real women out of the footnotes. Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker follows Elizabeth Keckley, a formerly enslaved seamstress who became Mary Lincoln’s confidante. The Spymistress and Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule look at the Civil War from parlors, prisons, and army camps rather than just from the battlefield. Later books such as Fates and Traitors, Enchantress of Numbers, Resistance Women, The Women’s March, Switchboard Soldiers, and Canary Girls trace the lives of codebreakers, suffragists, resistance fighters, and factory workers whose quiet persistence shaped history.
Throughout, she returns to a few steady interests: how families fracture and mend, how ordinary people react when history presses in, and how women’s work, whether sewing or caregiving or organizing, leaves marks that last longer than anyone expects.
Today Chiaverini lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with her husband and two sons. She continues to write at the intersection of research and everyday life, dividing her time between drafting new novels, sketching quilt designs, and meeting readers who arrive at signings with dog‑eared paperbacks, finished samplers, and their own family stories stitched into cloth.
