Author bio
Jen Calonita grew up on Long Island, in Carle Place, and started writing stories young. In fourth grade, she wrote down a wish to become an author for kids, and that early mix of imagination, humor, and pop culture energy still runs through her books.
She knew early what kind of stories she wanted to tell.
After graduating from Boston College, Calonita went into entertainment journalism and became a senior editor at Teen People. The job put her on movie sets, at concerts, and in interview rooms with actors and musicians. It also gave her a close look at how celebrity really works, which later became the spark for Secrets of My Hollywood Life.
That series introduced readers to teen actress Kaitlin Burke, who is trying to survive fame, school, friendships, and nonstop tabloid attention all at once. Readers who like backstage drama and a fast, funny voice still find it a great place to meet Calonita on the page. It also helped launch a long career built around girls who are dealing with pressure, attention, and big changes.
Then she started building bigger fantasy worlds.
With Fairy Tale Reform School, Calonita moved into middle grade fantasy and had a lot of fun flipping fairy-tale expectations. Gilly Cobbler, a thief sent to a school run by reformed villains, gave her room to write about friendship, loyalty, and the messy line between good and bad. Later series like Royal Academy Rebels and Isle of Ever kept that adventurous spirit going, with more magic, clues, curses, and kids who would rather ask questions than follow the script.
Calonita has also become one of the key writers in Disney's A Twisted Tale line. In books like Mirror, Mirror, Conceal, Don't Feel, and Go the Distance, she takes familiar stories and nudges one big thing off course, then follows the fallout. That same interest in alternate paths shows up in books like 12 to 22 and The Retake, where a magical filter or a mysterious app pushes ordinary kids into very unusual situations.
She also writes contemporary stories with a lighter, breezier feel. Sleepaway Girls, Summer State of Mind, Belles, and the VIP books lean into crushes, friendship drama, summer chaos, and the awkward fun of growing up. Even when the settings change, from Hollywood to fairy kingdoms to camp cabins, her stories tend to come back to the same questions: who are you when the spotlight hits, and who do you trust when things get messy?
Awards and bestseller lists have followed, including honors for Secrets of My Hollywood Life and a Teen Choice Book Award win for Mirror, Mirror. More recently, Isle of Ever became an instant New York Times bestseller. Calonita now lives in New York with her husband, their two sons, and a chihuahua named Ben Kenobi, and she still sounds like someone who genuinely enjoys plotting the next twist.
