Jen Blood Books in Order

Jen Blood was born in Rockland, Maine, and grew up among the small fishing villages of midcoast Maine. That stretch of coast, with its rough weather, working harbors, island roads, and close-knit communities, never really left her. It shows up again and again in her fiction, where place is not just background but part of the pressure her characters live under.

Maine is more than scenery in her books.

Blood knew early that writing mattered to her, but the road into a full writing life was not especially tidy. She has said that getting a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age memoir published by a small press in Cape Elizabeth when she was twenty-three made the whole thing feel real. While she was an undergrad at Goddard in 2003, she also began work on All the Blue-Eyed Angels, the novel that would eventually introduce Erin Solomon.

She later earned an MFA in Creative Writing, with a focus on popular fiction, from the University of Southern Maine. Along the way she worked as a freelance journalist, editor, and publishing consultant, with work appearing in magazines such as Down East, Pif, and Bark, along with newspapers and periodicals around the country. She has also taught authors about writing, marketing, and publishing, which fits the practical streak that runs through a lot of her work.

That journalism background helps explain a lot about her fiction. Blood likes reporters, researchers, and people who keep asking questions after common sense says they should stop. Even when her plots brush up against cults, conspiracies, or the uncanny, the stories stay tied to legwork, hard choices, and the stubborn need to know what really happened.

Many readers first meet her through the Erin Solomon books. All the Blue-Eyed Angels starts with an investigative reporter returning to coastal Maine to face the cult fire that wrecked her childhood, and later books such as Sins of the Father, Southern Cross, Before the After, and The Book of J. widen that mystery into something bigger and more personal. The series helped make Blood a USA Today bestselling author, and it also brought awards attention, including a B.R.A.G. Medallion for All the Blue-Eyed Angels and honorable mention at the New England Book Festival for Sins of the Father.

She likes stories where the past will not stay quiet.

Her Flint K-9 Search and Rescue books bring another important part of her life onto the page. In The Darkest Thread, Inside the Echo, and The Redemption Game, Jamie Flint and her dogs work cases involving missing people, wilderness searches, abuse, and murder. Blood has also worked in animal rescue, and at one point she was running an animal rescue in Oregon, so the dog work in these novels feels lived-in rather than decorative. The animals are partners, not props.

After years of travel and work in other parts of the country, Blood returned to Maine, and much of her writing still circles back there. Coastal towns, remote woods, damaged families, determined women, and dogs with jobs are very much her territory. If you pick up one of her books, chances are good you will get a fast-moving mystery, a strong sense of place, and at least one character too stubborn to walk away.
