Star Trek: TOS (Original) Books Books in Order

Jean Lorrah came to professional Star Trek fiction after writing fan stories in the 1970s. That background shows in her Original Series novels. She is comfortable with the familiar Enterprise crew, but she also likes to linger with families, scientists, patients, and civilians whose lives are affected by the crew's arrival.

The result is Trek that often feels like a mystery with a social question underneath it.

The Vulcan Academy Murders is the natural starting point. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy arrive on Vulcan because an Enterprise crew member needs specialized care. When unexplained deaths begin at the Vulcan Academy Hospital, Kirk has to investigate in a place where the very idea of murder is considered an affront to logic. Spock's parents, Amanda and Sarek, are drawn into the case, giving the story a personal edge.

Vulcan matters here as more than a backdrop. Lorrah uses its institutions, customs, and emotional restraint to make the investigation harder. The characters must deal with what happens when a community's proud self-image makes it difficult to recognize wrongdoing in its own midst.

The follow-up, The IDIC Epidemic, shifts to Nisus, a diverse science colony with strong ties to Vulcan. A fast-moving plague threatens residents from many worlds, and the crisis tests the colony's commitment to the idea of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Kirk and the Enterprise crew have to help contain the danger while the fear surrounding the disease creates political and personal pressure.

Both books are from the era when Star Trek paperbacks often told complete, episode-sized stories. You can read either on its own, but the second gains depth from the first because it revisits several characters and concerns. Fans who like McCoy's medical perspective, Spock's family history, or Star Trek mysteries with ethical stakes will find a clear path here.
