Author bio

JC Ryan is the pen name of Leon Mostert, a thriller writer whose own life has had a few sharp turns before fiction became the main road. He was born and raised in Namibia, with Afrikaans as his first language, and grew up on a large farm in the Kalahari region on the eastern side of the country.

That childhood left him with plenty of usable memory. The farm had sheep, goats, cattle, wild animals, huge weaver-bird nests, and long days on horseback helping his father check fences and animals. It is easy to see why landscapes, danger, and practical know-how keep turning up in his books.

Before he wrote novels, Ryan served as a military officer for seven years. A serious back injury ended that path and sent him back to university, where he studied law. He later ran a private legal practice for more than fifteen years.

Then came another change.

He moved overseas, first to New Zealand and later to Australia’s Gold Coast, and worked as an IT project manager. For years he commuted between the Gold Coast and Brisbane. That daily train ride became thinking time, then story time, then writing time.

Ryan had wanted to write for a long while, but he did not start with thrillers. He first tried nonfiction, including self-improvement and natural-health material. The spark for fiction came after he watched a television documentary about the pyramids in Egypt and began wondering what kind of story he could build around ancient mysteries, hidden knowledge, and the parts of history people argue about.

That idea became The 10th Cycle, published in May 2014, and it opened the Rossler Foundation books. The series follows Daniel Rossler, Dr. Sarah Clarke, and a growing cast as they chase clues tied to the Great Pyramid, lost civilizations, Antarctica, ancient technology, and groups that would rather keep the past buried.

He did not stay in one lane. The Carter Devereux books, starting with Nothing New Under the Sun, lean hard into archaeology, disputed history, and secret societies. The Rex Dalton books, beginning with The Fulcrum, switch to action thrillers, with a former black-ops operator and his military dog Digger stumbling into one dangerous situation after another. The Exonerated series, including Judgment Call, moves into legal suspense, wrongful convictions, and the messy line between law and justice.

Readers tend to come to Ryan for big plots, travel, conspiracies, historical puzzles, military detail, and characters who do not wait politely for permission when someone needs help.

Ryan turned to writing full time in 2019, when he was 63. He lives on the Gold Coast of Australia with his wife, his college sweetheart, and has two daughters and two dogs.
