Author bio

James P. Blaylock was born in Long Beach, California, on September 20, 1950, and has spent most of his life in Southern California. That sense of place runs through much of his fiction, where ordinary streets, old houses, beaches, canyons, and small businesses can suddenly open onto something much stranger.

He studied English at California State University, Fullerton, earning both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, the latter in 1974. He began teaching composition in 1976, around the same time he sold his early short story "The Pink of Fading Neon" to TriQuarterly.

Teaching and writing have stayed closely linked in his life.

Blaylock later taught creative writing at several Orange County colleges and universities, and became a longtime professor at Chapman University. He also developed the Creative Writing Conservatory at the Orange County School of the Arts. For many years, he helped younger writers build stories while continuing to make room for his own odd inventions, haunted places, and impossible machines.

His first novel, The Elfin Ship, arrived in 1982. It introduced a funny, quest-shaped fantasy world filled with cheesemakers, elves, dwarfs, unreliable maps, and travelers who are rarely as prepared as they think they are. It was followed by The Disappearing Dwarf and The Stone Giant, books that keep the adventures loose, playful, and packed with eccentric characters.

Then came the Victorian adventures of scientist Langdon St. Ives. In stories beginning with "The Ape-Box Affair" and novels such as Homunculus, Lord Kelvin's Machine, and The Aylesford Skull, Blaylock sends St. Ives through gaslit London, hidden laboratories, underground rivers, airships, and fights with the dangerous Dr. Ignacio Narbondo. These books helped shape what later came to be called steampunk, though they are just as interested in friendship, family, bad luck, and wild scientific ideas.

He also writes contemporary supernatural fiction set closer to home. The Last Coin, The Paper Grail, and All the Bells on Earth bring old religious mysteries and unsettling relics into California life. The Ghosts Trilogy, Night Relics, Winter Tides, and The Rainy Season, takes grief, memory, and family trouble seriously while allowing ghosts and buried histories to press in from the edges.

The strange things matter, but the people matter more.

Blaylock has received two World Fantasy Awards, for "Paper Dragons" and Thirteen Phantasms, and Homunculus won the Philip K. Dick Memorial Award. He has also worked closely with friends and fellow writers Tim Powers and K. W. Jeter, and he and Powers created the imaginary Victorian poet William Ashbless, who turns up in their shared fictional territory.

His later life has remained rooted in Orange, California. He has been married to Viki, his high school sweetheart, for more than fifty years, and they have two sons. Away from the desk and classroom, he has spent time gardening, working on the family home, going to the beach, traveling, and building sets for local community theater. Those everyday interests feel right at home beside his fiction, where a familiar neighborhood is often only one curious object away from another world.
