James D.F. Hannah writes crime fiction that feels rooted in the places he knows best. He came to fiction later than a lot of writers do.

In Midnight Lullaby, a missing-person case drags him back into violence and local corruption. Complicated Shadows widens the canvas with a missing computer expert, bad lies, and criminal competition. She Talks to Angels turns on an old murder and the damage it left behind. Friend of the Devil and Behind the Wall of Sleep push Henry deeper into county power struggles, biker trouble, and the kind of bad decisions that never stay small for long.

The stakes in Hannah's books are rarely world-sized, but they matter fiercely to the people living them.

He has said his biggest touchstones include Robert B. Parker, Lawrence Block, Ed McBain, Sue Grafton, and Loren Estleman. You can feel that love of classic crime fiction in the setup and dialogue, but the books do not read like museum pieces. What readers tend to remember is the blend of hard-boiled plotting, bruised humor, and a strong sense of place. The Righteous Path, which shifts the focus to Sheriff Matt Simms, shows the same county from the lawman's side and makes clear that Hannah is just as interested in duty, illness, loyalty, and despair as he is in the mechanics of a mystery.

The work has earned real notice. Behind the Wall of Sleep won a Shamus Award, She Talks to Angels was nominated for one, and his fiction has also drawn Anthony recognition. His short stories have appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Best American Mystery and Suspense, along with a steady run of crime anthologies.

There is a plainspoken quality to Hannah's writing that fits the people he writes about. He likes characters who are cornered, flawed, and still trying to do one decent thing before the lights go out. These days he is based in Louisville, and even from there he keeps finding his way back to Parker County.
