Author bio

Mari Hannah was born in Westminster and moved north as a child, splitting her early years between London and the landscapes of North East England. That mix of city streets, pit villages and wild coastline would later become the backdrop to almost all of her fiction.

After school she studied at Teesside University on a Home Office sponsored course and joined the probation service. Working as a probation officer in the North East brought her into daily contact with offenders, victims and the front line of the criminal justice system.

That career ended suddenly when she was assaulted on duty and suffered a serious wrist injury. The damage meant she could no longer do the job she had trained for. During recovery she started to type instead of write by hand and began to sketch out stories.

Screenwriting came first. Hannah won a place on a BBC drama development scheme, where she pitched a crime series built around a Northumbria detective called Kate Daniels. The pilot script did not reach the screen, but it gave her the characters, tone and confidence that would anchor her novels.

Her debut novel, The Murder Wall, grew out of that script and was published in 2012. It went on to win the Polari First Book Prize and introduced readers to DCI Kate Daniels, a driven, openly gay detective working complex cases in and around Newcastle. The follow up, Settled Blood, had already earned a Northern Writers' Award, and together the early books established Hannah as a new voice in British crime fiction.

She has since written three interlocking Northumberland based series. The DCI Kate Daniels books follow a long running police career from unsolved double murder to international disaster, always rooted in detailed procedure and local politics. The Stone and Oliver novels centre on DCI David Stone and DS Frankie Oliver, a partnership that lets her explore missing children, media scandals and rural communities under pressure. The Matthew Ryan books, sometimes called the Ryan and O'Neil series, push further into the world of Special Branch and high stakes conspiracies.

Across all three, certain threads repeat. Hannah is interested in how trauma shapes people who choose to work in law enforcement, and how loyalty and compromise play out inside a close knit team. She writes openly about queer lives through characters like Kate Daniels and treats sexuality as one strand of a wider, complicated identity rather than a twist on its own.

Her work has been recognised with a string of awards. In addition to the Polari and Northern Writers' honours, she has won the Crime Writers' Association Dagger in the Library for her body of work, DIVA Wordsmith of the Year and Capital Crime's Crime Book of the Year for Without a Trace. Her novels have been translated into several languages and the Kate Daniels and Stone and Oliver series are in active development for television.

Hannah lives in a small village in rural Northumberland with her partner, a former murder detective whose experience feeds into the authenticity of her books. When she is not writing she appears at crime festivals, chairs events and works with libraries and reading groups, still drawing on the region and the justice system that first shaped her stories.
