Author bio

Hannah Dennison was born in Old Basing, a village in Hampshire, England, and she has said that playing in the ruins and secret tunnels of Old Basing House helped spark her love of stories. As a teenager she moved with her family to Cullompton in Devon, and the West Country stayed with her. Its old houses, local customs, legends, and slightly offbeat humor later became the natural home for her mysteries.

Place matters in her books.

Before she was a novelist, Dennison tried a bit of everything. After a brief spell in the Royal Navy, she worked at a local weekly paper, where part of her job involved funeral and obituary reporting. That experience fed straight into the Vicky Hill books, which follow a young reporter stuck on the obituary desk and desperate for a bigger story.

At twenty-one she left Devon, spent time in Kent, and worked a run of jobs that sound as if they were borrowed from fiction: secretary to a Formula One world champion, antique dealer, private jet flight attendant, and later a Hollywood story analyst. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue screenwriting, read huge numbers of scripts, and learned how stories are built from the inside out. She also became involved with the UCLA Extension Writers' Program, where she has taught mystery writing workshops.

That long route shows up on the page.

Her first novel, A Vicky Hill Exclusive!, arrived in 2008 and introduced one of her favorite blends, cozy mystery with a tabloid edge. In Scoop! and Expose!, Vicky keeps chasing front page stories through a Devon town full of odd contests, gossip, and badly kept secrets. Readers who enjoy these books usually like the comedy, the village detail, and Vicky's mix of ambition and chaos.

Dennison reached an even wider audience with Murder at Honeychurch Hall, which opens her long running series about antique dealer Kat Stanford and her impossible, irresistible mother, Iris. The Honeychurch books lean into crumbling estates, antiques, class tensions, old grudges, and a lot of mother-daughter sparring. Titles like Deadly Desires at Honeychurch Hall and A Killer Christmas at Honeychurch Hall show how comfortably she works in that world.

Fresh starts matter in her fiction.

With Death at High Tide, she shifted to the Isles of Scilly and a new pair of sisters, Evie and Margot Mead, who inherit a run-down hotel on a tiny island off Cornwall. That series keeps her love of eccentric communities and layered secrets, but adds tides, weather, and a more boxed-in kind of suspense. Danger at the Cove continues that fresh-start story, with money problems, old rivalries, and murder crashing into hotel renovations.

After about twenty-five years on the American West Coast, Dennison moved back to the English countryside. She now lives in Devon with her two Hungarian Vizslas, Draco and Athena, and she still teaches writing as well as working on new fiction. Her books feel shaped by all of it, the newsroom beginnings, the antique trade, the Hollywood years, and that lasting affection for the wild, funny corners of the West Country.
