Author bio

Jacqueline Wilson was born on 17 December 1945 in Bath, England, and she grew up in Kingston upon Thames. From the start, she was the kind of kid who watched the everyday world and turned it into stories.

As a child she filled notebook after notebook, and she was so deep in her imagination that classmates nicknamed her “Jacky Daydream”. She’s talked about loving classic family stories and school stories when she was young, and that mix, big feelings plus sharp observation, still sits at the heart of her books.

Wilson left school at 16, trained in secretarial work, and then found her way into publishing. As a teenager she worked for a company that produced magazines, including the girls’ magazine Jackie, and writing became part of her working life, not just a hobby. Before she was known for middle grade fiction, she tried different lanes, including writing crime novels, while steadily building up her confidence and craft.

By the time she wrote The Story of Tracy Beaker, she’d already published a lot of books, but that one changed everything. Tracy’s voice, funny, spiky, and painfully honest, brought a new kind of realism to popular children’s fiction, and it helped Wilson find the style she’s best loved for.

Tracy is the book a lot of readers meet first, and they don’t forget her.

That voice shows up in plenty of her best-known stories. In The Suitcase Kid she tackles the practical, exhausting reality of being shuttled between parents. In Dustbin Baby she follows a girl who can’t stop wondering where she came from. In Double Act and Bad Girls she takes sibling dynamics and school drama seriously, without ever forgetting to be witty. She also writes about the things adults sometimes try to tidy away, mental health, money worries, unstable homes, first crushes, eating worries, and the ache of wanting to belong. The point is never to preach. It’s to let kids feel seen, even when life is messy.

Alongside standalones, Wilson has built worlds readers stay in for years. The Tracy Beaker books follow Tracy from childhood into a different kind of family, and the Hetty Feather novels bring the same emotional honesty to Victorian settings. She was Children’s Laureate from 2005 to 2007, received an OBE in 2002, and was made a Dame in 2008, later receiving a further honour in 2025.

Her personal life has had big chapters too. She married Millar Wilson in 1965 and they had a daughter, Emma, and the marriage ended in divorce in 2004. She has been with her partner, Trish Beswick, since the early 2000s, and she has said publicly that she is gay. After many years based in southwest London, she later moved to the countryside in East Sussex.

Wilson has also been open about serious health problems, including heart failure in 2008 and later kidney disease that led to dialysis and a transplant. Even through that, she kept writing, and kept writing for children.

She still writes with the stubborn focus of a daydreaming kid.
