Series background & context

The Girls books follow a tight trio of friends, Ellie, Magda, and Nadine, as they lurch through the best and worst parts of growing up.

These stories are set firmly in the real world: school corridors, bedrooms with posters on the wall, awkward parties, and those long conversations where you swear you’ll be friends forever. The friendships are the point, even when boys, parents, and everything else try to pull the girls apart.

It’s messy on purpose.

In Girls in Love, Girls Under Pressure, Girls Out Late, and Girls in Tears, Wilson tracks first crushes, body image, changing families, and the way confidence can vanish overnight. The books can be funny, but they never pretend that teenage feelings are small.

Ellie, in particular, often carries a lot inside her head. She wants to do the right thing, wants to be liked, and sometimes doesn’t know where to put all her anger and sadness. Magda and Nadine bring their own chaos and charm, and the shifting balance between the three keeps the series moving.

Years later, Think Again revisits the friendship from an adult point of view, when the girls are older and the consequences look different. It’s still about the same question, who are you when your oldest friends are watching?

Start at the beginning and read straight through if you can. The payoffs come from seeing the girls change, and from noticing what never really changes at all.
