Series background & context
The Is There Anybody There? books lean into spooky fun, with just enough chill to keep you reading one more chapter.
The main character, Vicky, is a modern teen who’s curious about the supernatural, partly for the thrill and partly because she wants something bigger than everyday life. When she and her friends try a séance, it doesn’t stay a game for long.
Then Vicky starts to lose control.
In Spirit Raising and Crystal Gazing, the tension comes from the mix of ordinary school life and something strange pressing in at the edges. There are secrets, crushes, and friendship drama, but also eerie moments where the past feels uncomfortably close, and Vicky has to figure out who she can trust.
A big part of the series is about identity. What happens when you don’t feel fully at home in your own skin, and then something, or someone, tries to move in? Wilson keeps it readable and funny, but she doesn’t talk down to the reader, and she lets the weirdness have real consequences.
If you like a light supernatural mystery with a strong, slightly chaotic narrator, this series delivers. It’s best read in order, because the second story builds on what Vicky has already stirred up.
