JA Sutherland Books in Order

J.A. Sutherland wrote his first novel in 1983, when he was sixteen. By his own account it was very bad, but the important part is that he wrote it at all. A few short stories and a few rejection slips followed, and then writing slipped out of the center of his life, even if the stories never really left him.

For a long stretch, the voices stayed. He just was not publishing them.

The turn back to fiction came in 2013, and it came in a very internet sort of way. Sutherland has said he clicked on a tweet promising something unbelievable and found dinosaur erotica instead. His reaction was less shock than opportunity. If readers existed for that, he figured, there had to be readers for the space fleets, rogues, and troublemakers living in his head.

So he started taking dictation again.

That decision led to Into the Dark, published in November 2014, and from there to the work he is best known for, the Alexis Carew books. Those novels take the structure and feel of naval adventure fiction and push it out into deep space. Readers who enjoy age-of-sail rhythm, chain-of-command problems, and a heroine who has to earn every inch of authority tend to find a lot to like there.

The Alexis Carew series is built around growth. Alexis starts young, on a frontier world, with very little room to shape her own future. Across books like Mutineer, The Little Ships, HMS Nightingale, and Privateer, Sutherland follows her from raw beginner to a leader carrying real responsibility. The books have battles and politics, but they are also interested in work, competence, and what command does to a person.

He likes capable people under pressure.

Sutherland has also kept widening the map around that main series. Planetfall reaches back into the history of Dalthus and the founding of the Carew family world. Spacer and Smuggler shift to a more roguish corner of the same universe, following the man who will later be known as Avrel Dansby. The tone there is less formal Navy life, more trade routes, bad jobs, and morally awkward choices.

Then there is Dark Runs, which begins with Running Start and continues in Running Scared. Those books move closer to Earth and closer to the present, trading fleet protocol for fugitives, corporations, and a scrappy fight to stay free. Under the name Richard Grantham, he also wrote Of Dubious Intent, a darker London-set adventure with steampunk edges. That split tells you a lot about his range. He likes space opera, but he clearly also likes grime, danger, and people improvising under stress.

Another thing that stands out is how plainly he talks about the job. He has written about returning to fiction after decades away and about balancing books with a day job while building a backlist. There is nothing especially lofty in that picture, and that is part of the charm. His career feels less like a sudden arrival and more like a stubborn, practical decision to keep going.

And that practical streak runs through the fiction too. Whether he is writing about midshipmen, smugglers, fugitives, or street thieves, Sutherland keeps coming back to people who have to make hard calls with limited options. That makes even the biggest settings feel lived in. The ships are large, the stakes can be planetary, but the stories stay close to the people doing the work.
