Author bio
Tui T Sutherland was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 31, 1978. Before high school she had already lived in Asuncion, Paraguay, Miami, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. When her family moved to New Jersey, she got involved in theatre, mostly doing backstage work, which feels oddly fitting for a writer who would later become so good at building big casts and dramatic scenes.
She grew up moving a lot, and that sense of stepping into new worlds seems to have stayed with her.
She graduated from Williams College in 1998 and later worked in children's publishing as an editor. That gave her a close look at how books come together from the inside. Then she made the shift to writing full time, helped along by a pileup of story ideas and the simple fact that late-night writing suited her better than early-morning office life.
Her earliest books were for young readers, including Meet Mo and Ella and Fun with Mo and Ella. She also wrote the teen novel This Must Be Love, a modern retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the mythology-heavy Avatars trilogy. Even in those early books, you can already see some of her favorite ingredients: fast plots, sharp banter, emotional stakes, and characters who get dropped into problems much bigger than they expected.
Then came Wings of Fire, the series that made her a defining author for a lot of middle grade fantasy readers. The big idea is wonderfully direct: what if the dragons were not the monsters at the edge of the map, but the ones carrying the whole story? Readers show up for prophecies, rival tribes, queens, magic, and cliff-hangers, but they stay because the dragons feel like real kids and families, stubborn, funny, scared, loyal, and often making a mess while trying to do the right thing.
She did not stop there. She wrote the Pet Trouble books for younger readers, co-wrote the Menagerie trilogy with her sister Kari Sutherland, and contributed Against the Tide to the shared-world Spirit Animals series. She has also written under other names, including Tamara Summers, Heather Williams, and Rob Kidd, and she has been part of the Erin Hunter team for books in the Seekers and Warriors worlds.
Darkstalker and Dragonslayer also show another side of her work. They take the world of Wings of Fire and either dig deep into its history or flip the viewpoint entirely, proving that she is just as interested in how a legend starts as she is in how a hero survives one.
She likes creatures with opinions.
A fun side note, in 2009 she was a two-day champion on Jeopardy!. She now lives in Massachusetts with her husband, children, and dogs, and she still writes across a wide range of ages and formats, from easy readers to big fantasy novels and graphic novel collaborations. If you read across her work, the through line is easy to spot: she loves momentum, she cares about friendship, and she knows that even the biggest adventure works better when the characters at the center feel funny, flawed, and human, even when they have scales or wings.
