Author bio

J Daniels grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and she still calls Maryland home. Before writing full time, she worked as a radiologic technologist, which makes for a pretty memorable contrast, one part hospital scrubs, one part contemporary romance.

Books came first.

She has said she was always an avid reader, especially of romance and fantasy, and after college she started writing romance herself. What began as a creative pull turned into a real career. Even after that shift, she has joked that you might still catch her in scrubs now and then, because that earlier working life never fully disappeared.

Her debut novel, Sweet Addiction, was first published in 2014. It introduced a style she still leans on, strong chemistry, fast banter, close friend groups, and characters who talk big but feel even bigger. Readers who pick up her books usually know what they are there for, tension, heat, and a couple who will have to work for their happy ending.

She followed that start with the Alabama Summer books, including Where I Belong, All I Want, and What I Need. Those stories are rooted in a small-town Alabama setting where everybody knows everybody, old history never stays buried for long, and side characters have a habit of becoming the next leads. If you like interconnected romance worlds, this is a big part of her appeal.

Then came the Dirty Deeds books, from Four Letter Word to Down Too Deep. These novels keep the flirtation and steam, but they also make room for harder things, secrets, grief, regret, rough pasts, and the slow business of learning to trust someone. That mix, sexy on the surface and tender underneath, is one reason her books tend to stick with readers.

She likes a big emotional payoff.

That shows up again in The Tragedy of Felix and Jake, a later standalone that brings recovery, longing, and found family into the picture. Across the bibliography, a few patterns come up again and again: protective heroes, women with backbone, friendships that matter, and relationships that get tested before they settle. Even when the setup is playful, a wedding hookup, a wrong number call, a fake relationship, there is usually something more serious moving underneath.

Daniels has also landed on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists, but the day-to-day feel of her work is refreshingly down to earth. She writes characters who joke, sulk, want the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, and then have to deal with the fallout. They are messy in ways romance readers tend to recognize.

Outside the books, she has shared that she loves hiking, traveling, weekends in the mountains, and spending time with her family. She lives in Maryland with her husband and three kids, and she also enjoys staying connected with readers. That mix of busy family life, ordinary routines, and high-emotion storytelling feels like a good summary of the brand she has built.
