Series background & context
J.D. Blunt has long been a power behind covert operations, a Texas senator with the influence and instincts to build programs such as Firestorm. In this series, he is no longer the person sending highly trained operatives into danger. He is the one caught in the middle of it.
The stories place Blunt in the Florida Keys, where the water, islands, boats, and tourist calm create a sharp contrast with the threats closing in around him. He is politically experienced and used to controlling a room, but physical danger demands a different set of choices.
This time, there is no team to call first.
Blunt has to rely on his judgment, his understanding of human motives, and a willingness to act when events move beyond normal political channels. The threats have ties to the same world of intelligence, crime, and international pressure found in Patterson's other series, but the more intimate setting gives these books a different feel.
The tropical landscape is not just a backdrop. Open water and isolated locations can make escape difficult, evidence disappear, and help feel very far away. Blunt's experience makes him hard to fool, yet his enemies know that a man used to operating through others may be vulnerable when he must take action himself.
Start with Into the Deep, which introduces this more exposed version of Blunt and establishes the Florida setting. Continue with High Tide and Rip Tide for the strongest sense of the ongoing danger and the consequences of each case.
Expect compact, fast-moving suspense with political knowledge, physical peril, and a familiar supporting figure stepping out from behind the operations he once directed.
