Iskryne World (Elizabeth Bear) (Sarah Monette) Books in Order

The Iskryne World novels are a collaboration between Elizabeth Bear and Sarah Monette. Together, the books build a northern fantasy setting where survival depends on loyalty, preparation, and a willingness to live with traditions that can be both necessary and unfair. The series starts with war, but it keeps widening into a story about culture and change.

At its heart are the wolfcarls. These are human fighters bonded by mind and instinct to giant trellwolves, powerful creatures who are partners rather than mounts or pets. The bonds make the wolfcarls vital to defending the Northlands against trolls, wyverns, and other dangers. They also remake the wolfcarls' personal lives in ways that can unsettle the people around them.

A Companion to Wolves introduces Isolfr, a noble youth chosen for the Wolfhall and paired with Viradechtis, a queen wolf. He leaves behind the role his family expected and enters a community shaped by pack life, shared responsibility, and rules that do not always line up with human ideas about rank or propriety. The danger outside the hall is immediate, but so is the pressure of learning who he can become within it.

The wolves change the terms of the story.

In The Tempering of Men, a hard-won victory creates a difficult peace. Isolfr and the packs have to make a new home while neighboring powers and human leaders decide how much freedom they can tolerate in the wolfcarls. This is a book about aftermath, which means every promise, rivalry, and mistake from the earlier conflict still has weight.

The third novel, An Apprentice to Elves, follows Alfgyfa, Isolfr's daughter. Her life has been shaped by the Wolfhall, but the wider human society still has narrow ideas about where a young woman belongs. When she is sent to the elf matriarch Tin, she enters a new kind of political work, carrying messages and expectations between groups that need one another without fully trusting one another.

That generational handoff matters. Isolfr's books ask what it costs to become part of the pack. Alfgyfa's asks what happens when someone raised near that freedom starts to push against the limits of the world outside it. The ongoing story has battles and monsters, but its deeper tension comes from people trying to build a future without pretending the past was fair.

Read these novels in order, starting with A Companion to Wolves. The world, the relationships, and the consequences all grow book by book, and the later turns have more force when you have seen the Wolfhall take shape from the beginning.
