In Their Shoes Books in Order

The In Their Shoes books follow Joy Attwood, a rookie journalist with more curiosity than self-protection. Her project is simple on paper. She spends a day shadowing a different person at work, then turns that experience into a book. Mackay uses that structure to move through different professions and social worlds, but the real draw is watching Joy discover that every job has its own hidden chaos, private language, and survival tricks.

It is a very good premise for satire.

The first book, The Teacher, shows exactly why. Joy trails a high school teacher through a brutal workday and gets a crash course in burnout, bureaucracy, unruly students, and the gap between what outsiders think teaching is and what it actually feels like from the inside. From there the series keeps jumping settings. The Actor puts Joy in the nervous, performative world of stage work. The Model moves into image, vanity, and status. The Artist takes her to Paris and throws her into a day that becomes much more dangerous than a cultural outing should be.

Later books widen the pressure. The Nurse traps Joy inside the medical chaos of a graveyard shift at a hospital, where speed, exhaustion, and bodily mess become part of the rhythm. The Dealer ends the run on a much harder note, dragging her into the orbit of a violent drug figure and forcing the series' joke, spend a day in someone else's shoes, into territory where the price of participation can be very high.

What makes these books more than a gimmick is Joy herself. She is not a cool observer floating above the action. She gets flustered, overcommits, misreads people, and very often ends up in deeper trouble than she expected. That makes her a useful guide because the reader learns the world at the same speed she does. It also means the books can shift naturally from comedy into suspense. A day at work, in Mackay's hands, is never just a day at work.

Tone is everything here. The series is darkly funny, heavily satirical, and often vulgar in a very British way. Mackay likes systems that barely function, people who are just one bad hour from disaster, and institutions that look respectable until Joy gets close enough to see the cracks. He is interested in what jobs do to people, but also in what people do to jobs.

If you want neat workplace fiction, this series is too messy for that. If you want sharp social comedy with a thriller pulse and a heroine who keeps finding herself in the wrong room at the wrong moment, In Their Shoes is the better fit.
