Series background & context

Three women find friendship, work, and new romances around a Tennessee nursery and an old family house. In the Garden links Stella Rothchild, Roz Harper, and Hayley Phillips through their lives at Harper House, near Memphis. Their circumstances differ, but each needs room to begin again. The trilogy combines contemporary romance with a ghost story, as the women try to understand the restless figure known as the Harper Bride.

The nursery gives the series an everyday center. Plants need tending, customers need help, and running a business involves decisions that don't wait for a personal problem to be resolved. The house supplies a different kind of continuity, carrying generations of Harper family history. Living and working in these connected spaces brings the women close enough to help one another, while also making the past difficult to ignore.

Blue Dahlia begins with Stella, a widow moving with her two young sons. Roz offers her both a place to live and the job of managing the nursery. Stella's organized approach meets the less orderly habits of landscaper Logan Kitridge, and their working relationship develops into attraction. Building a new life involves practical security as well as the more uncertain question of whether she is ready to love again.

The Harper Bride doesn't welcome every change.

Black Rose puts Roz's life in focus. She is the owner who has made a home and a business available to others, but she has her own history and emotional defenses. Research into the haunting draws Mitch Carnegie into that history and into her life. Red Lily follows Hayley, who arrived needing work and a future for herself and her child. Her feelings for Roz's son Harper add another relationship within the household and another risk to the stability she has begun to find.

The ghost's story connects the books, so the supernatural thread develops alongside the featured romances. The Harper Bride's presence can seem tender around children and hostile toward adult love, making her more complicated than an unexplained sound in a hallway. Understanding the house requires attention to its history. For the living characters, investigating that past becomes part of protecting the new relationships taking shape around them.

Read Blue Dahlia, Black Rose, and Red Lily in order. Each woman has her own romantic story, while the shared household, workplace, and haunting carry forward. The tone mixes domestic warmth with unease, and the setting gives gardening and family care a practical role. Readers who like women supporting one another through different stages of life will find that friendship as important as the ghostly mystery. The series asks how a home can preserve its history without allowing that history to control everyone living there.
