Series background & context

In Shady Grove is Beth Andrews's longest small-town romance series. Set in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, the books follow connected couples whose lives overlap through family, work, friendship, and the simple fact that a small town rarely lets anyone keep a secret for long.

Everybody knows somebody's history.

The series opens with Talk of the Town, where Neil Pettit returns hoping to repair the damage he caused with Maddie Montesano, the woman he left behind and the mother of his daughter. Their old attraction has not disappeared, but neither has Maddie's anger. That mix of unfinished business and local gossip sets the tone for the books that follow.

The Montesano family remains central. What Happens Between Friends turns to James Montesano and Sadie Ellison, best friends who have spent years avoiding the possibility that they might want more. Caught Up in You follows Eddie Montesano, a single father, and Harper Kavanagh, his son's teacher. Their connection grows while they work through Max's struggles at school and their own fears about opening up again.

Later books expand the town's circle. Small-Town Redemption pairs ER nurse Charlotte Ellison with bar owner Kane Bartasavich, a man with a difficult past and a teenage daughter. Charming the Firefighter brings firefighter Leo Montesano together with recently divorced accountant Penelope Denning and her teenage son. About That Night, Winter's Kiss, and The Marine's Embrace continue to follow the Bartasavich family and the people drawn into their lives.

The series has a strong found-family feel, even when the families involved are not easy. Children are not simply background decoration. They have opinions, needs, and a real effect on the adult characters' choices. Ex-spouses, old relationships, career changes, injuries, grief, and money trouble also have consequences rather than vanishing when the romance heats up.

The emotional tone is warm but not weightless. These are stories about people who have made mistakes, sometimes big ones, and who have to do more than apologize if they want a second chance. The town offers support, pressure, comic relief, and plenty of witnesses.

Start with Talk of the Town. Every novel centers on a different couple and can be read on its own, but publication order gives the best view of how Shady Grove grows from one set of neighbors into a fully connected community.
