The series begins with Ariana Brenneman, a young Old Order Amish woman in Summer Grove, Pennsylvania, who loves her large family, hopes to open a café, and has never quite recovered from Quill Schlabach’s departure from the Amish world years earlier. When Quill returns, Ariana expects old hurt. What she gets instead is the beginning of a truth that reshapes everything she thought she knew about herself.

The big turning point is the discovery that Ariana and an Englisch young woman named Skylar Nash were switched at birth. From there, the trilogy becomes a story about identity, belonging, and the limits of simple labels like Amish or Englisch. Ariana is pulled toward her biological family and a broader worldview, while Skylar is pushed into the Brennemans’ Plain household at one of the lowest points in her life. Their parallel stories give the series real momentum, because both young women are trying to answer the same basic question from opposite directions: where is home, and who gets to define it?

Summer Grove itself matters a lot. The Brenneman family is large, loud, loving, opinionated, and deeply shaped by church rules and family authority. That means every new fact lands with force. Quill’s role adds even more tension because he moves between worlds and carries secrets of his own. Romance is part of the appeal, especially the long knot between Ariana and Quill, but the series is just as interested in parents, siblings, addiction, trust, and the ways communities protect people while also boxing them in.

This is Woodsmall at her most twisty, in a good way.

Compared with her gentler holiday stories, these books run hotter on conflict and revelation. The stakes are personal and social at the same time, and the emotional questions keep widening as Ariana and Skylar learn more. The trilogy asks what family really means when biology, upbringing, faith, and choice stop lining up neatly.

Read these in order, Ties that Bind, Fraying at the Edge, and Gathering the Threads. The plot builds straight through, and much of the payoff comes from watching Ariana and Skylar change as the truth keeps unfolding.
