I Was Legion

by Evan Currie

2020

Series background & context

Imperium of Terra is Evan Currie’s far-future space opera about a crumbling empire, a dangerous succession crisis, and the elite soldiers tasked with keeping the whole thing from falling apart.

The series opens with I Was Legion. The Terran Imperium is held together by the Conwin dynasty and the Legion, a force built as much for politics as for war. Under Empress Lian Conwin, the Empire has survived long enough to grow complacent, and a single public announcement is meant to project stability. Instead, it becomes the moment everything fractures, because the real fight is inside the palace walls as much as it is out on the frontier.

At the center are Princess Jinsha Conwin and Legionnaire Eryn Aubrey, assigned as her protector. Jinsha is smart, stubborn, and raised inside a system where every smile can hide a knife. Eryn is trained to be loyal and lethal, and she has to navigate the problem every bodyguard eventually faces: when the people you serve might be in danger from their own side. Their relationship has the best kind of tension, duty versus survival, protocol versus reality.

Then the assassination hits, and the story becomes a run.

In Legion in Exile and Legion Forever, Forever Legion, Jinsha and Eryn are forced into survival mode, trying to gather allies and stay a step ahead of a coup that wants them dead or controlled. The books lean into shifting loyalties, hidden agendas, and the constant question of what “legitimacy” means when the throne is contested. Every safe haven comes with a price, and every ally has limits.

Currie keeps the action moving, but the real engine is the push and pull between court intrigue and battlefield reality. You get firefights, political bargains, and the kind of hard moral compromises that come with trying to save an empire that may not deserve saving. Later in the series, the pair find a kind of sanctuary on the storm-wracked world New Caledonia, only to learn that even refuge can become a trap when old enemies and pirates come looking, and when deeper Imperial secrets threaten to surface.

If you like your space opera with elite-soldier camaraderie, sharp palace politics, and a clear, propulsive plot, this series is a strong fit. Start with I Was Legion and read in order to follow Jinsha and Eryn as they try to survive long enough to decide what the Imperium of Terra should become next.
