The Seeds that were Sown

by Evan Currie

2023

Thirty years after the Empire’s attack scattered humanity, Earth stands as a frozen fortress and its people are scattered across the stars. A new generation tries to reconnect, rebuild, and finish unfinished wars, even as old enemies and old mistakes resurface.

Series background & context

After the Odyssey picks up in the Odyssey One universe long after the first wars, when the dust has settled into something worse: a broken human diaspora and a homeworld that isn’t really home anymore.

The premise is simple and heavy. The Empire attacked Earth decades earlier, and the fighting scattered humanity across the stars. In the aftermath, Earth itself becomes a fortress system, frozen, battered, and guarded, while the survivors live in fragments, colonies, fleets, outposts, and places that were never meant to be permanent. Some groups cling to old flags and rank structures. Others have improvised something new, and don’t want outsiders telling them how to live.

This series starts with The Seeds that were Sown, which follows the “children of Earth” as they navigate an unpredictable galaxy shaped by loss and unfinished business. The war changed the map, but it didn’t settle the argument, and the people left behind have to decide whether rebuilding means going quiet, or whether it means finding the strength to push back again. The story is less about a single ship’s crew and more about communities trying to survive while they argue about what “home” even means now.

Currie uses the aftermath setting to explore a different kind of tension than the mainline Odyssey One books. The battles matter, but so do questions of identity and loyalty when you don’t have a stable government, clear borders, or even a shared version of history. Alliances are fragile, information is incomplete, and every decision is haunted by what happened to the world they thought they’d return to. Even getting from one place to another can feel like a gamble, because old enemies still exist and new threats grow in the gaps.

Harvest continues the arc, pushing the survivors to confront the long-term consequences of the earlier wars, and the costs of keeping people scattered and afraid. The title fits, this is about reaping what was planted in earlier books, in politics, in technology, and in the choices that forced people to run. It’s also about deciding what has to be collected and protected now, whether that’s resources, knowledge, or the few relationships that can hold a larger coalition together.

Bittersweet, tense, and still action-driven.

If you want the Odyssey One universe with an emphasis on fallout, rebuilding, and the hard work of stitching a civilization back together, start here after you’ve read the core saga. Begin with The Seeds that were Sown, then move to Harvest for the next stage of the struggle.
