On Silver Wings

Series background & context
The Warrior's Wings series, also known as the Hayden War Cycle, is Evan Currie’s powered-armor military science fiction, fast, tactical, and built around the kind of small-unit decisions that decide much bigger wars.
It begins with On Silver Wings, when a distant colony on Hayden’s World goes silent and a team is sent in on what’s supposed to be a low-risk training run. The experts are wrong. Sergeant Sorilla Aida ends up fighting an alien force with limited gear, no clear support, and no easy way home, and she has to turn frightened colonists into something like a fighting force before the enemy finishes its job.
Hayden’s World matters because it’s where the war becomes personal. It’s a jungle planet, messy and close, and the series spends real time on the practical grind of survival: ammo, armor power, morale, extraction plans that never survive contact. When the fighting pulls back up into orbit, Currie keeps the same grounded sensibility, using chain of command, logistics, and hard constraints to make the action feel earned.
As the books go on, the conflict widens. New leaders step in, including senior officers like Admiral Nadine Brooke and pilots like Captain Jane MacKay, and the “Hayden problem” turns into an interstellar standoff between Earth’s Solar Command and the alien Alliance. In Valkyrie Rising and Valkyrie Burning, the stalemate breaks and the war spills outward, forcing humanity to take risks, build alliances, and learn quickly or lose everything.
The series doesn’t stop when the shooting pauses. By Other Means pivots into tense negotiations where neither side fully understands what happened in the war’s final moments, and later entries follow Sorilla as she’s pulled back in again and again, whether the mission is intelligence gathering, protecting a vulnerable world in the no man’s land between powers, or dealing with border conflicts that can reignite old grudges.
The war is only over when the people in charge say it is.
If you like military sci-fi that keeps the camera close to the troopers, mixes ground combat with space action, and lets characters earn their victories through grit and competence, Warrior's Wings is a strong fit. Start with On Silver Wings and follow Sorilla’s arc from desperate survivor to one of the key soldiers shaping humanity’s place in a much bigger galaxy.
