Series background & context

The I-Team series is Pamela Clare’s romantic suspense world built around the Denver Independent’s investigative reporters. The core cast is mostly women who dig into stories powerful people would rather keep buried. Their work takes them into political corruption, environmental crimes, trafficking, prison abuse, cartel violence, terrorism, and old secrets that refuse to stay quiet.

It starts with Extreme Exposure, where reporter Kara McMillan is investigating toxic dumping and finds herself drawn to state senator Reece Sheridan. From there, each main book shifts focus to another reporter or someone close to the team. Tessa Novak crosses paths with undercover FBI agent Julian Darcangelo in Hard Evidence. Sophie Alton is pulled into a prison escape and a painful piece of her past in Unlawful Contact. Kat James, Natalie Benoit, Laura Nilsson, Holly Bradshaw, Mia Starr, and others all bring different stories and different kinds of courage to the table.

The newsroom is the anchor.

Clare’s years as an investigative journalist give the series its lived-in feel. Deadlines matter. Sources matter. So do fear, ethics, and the cost of asking questions when someone with money, weapons, or political cover wants the questions to stop. The suspense plots are high-stakes, but the reporting work keeps the series grounded.

The romance side usually pairs a journalist or I-Team-connected heroine with a law enforcement officer, military veteran, intelligence operative, marshal, or other protector type. That sounds familiar on paper, but the books are often about trust under pressure. The heroes are capable, but the heroines are not passengers. They investigate, resist, make mistakes, take risks, and often save themselves as much as anyone saves them.

The series is best read in order, especially if you enjoy seeing friendships, marriages, children, and inside jokes build over time. The main couples get their own arcs, but the supporting cast keeps returning. Novellas such as Heaven Can't Wait, Skin Deep, First Strike, Soul Deep, and Dead By Midnight add extra chapters to that wider found-family feeling.

Expect danger, heat, newsroom grit, and emotional recovery. Also expect Colorado to matter, from Denver streets to mountain roads and snowed-in ranches. The I-Team books are romantic suspense with a strong ensemble heart.
