Series background & context

Colorado High Country is Pamela Clare’s contemporary romance series set in Scarlet Springs, a small mountain town where cliffs, snowstorms, wildfires, rescue calls, and old heartbreaks are part of daily life. Compared with the I-Team books, this series leans more into small-town romance and outdoor adventure, though danger still has a way of showing up.

The heart of the series is the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team. Its members include climbers, firefighters, EMTs, dog trainers, veterans, engineers, and people who can keep their heads when the weather turns or someone is stranded on a mountain. The work gives the books action, but it also creates a strong community. These are people who know each other’s business, show up fast, and give each other grief with affection.

Scarlet Springs matters.

The first book, Barely Breathing, brings Lexi Jewell home after twelve years away and throws her back into Austin Taylor’s path. Slow Burn pairs city visitor Victoria Woodley with firefighter Eric Hawke. Falling Hard follows Ellie Meeks, a Gold Star widow raising twins, and Jesse Moretti, a former Army Ranger trying to outrun his own war memories. As the series continues, Clare broadens the cast to include Naomi Archer, Chaska Belcourt, Rain Minear, Joe Moffat, Kenzie Morgan, Harrison Conrad, Winona Belcourt, Jason Chiago, Megs Hall, Mitch Ahearn, Sasha Dillon, and Darius Silva.

The books often deal with second chances. Sometimes that means first love returning. Sometimes it means learning to live after combat, grief, abuse, loss, or a public career that has taken too much. The romance is warm, but it is rarely weightless. Clare likes characters who are competent in a crisis and a little less sure when it comes to letting someone love them.

The series also crosses into other Clare worlds. Chasing Fire brings together Colorado High Country and I-Team characters during a wildfire threatening Scarlet Springs. Breaking Free features connections that will reward longtime I-Team readers, while still centering Winona and Jason’s story.

Read from Barely Breathing if you want the town to grow around you. You can sample individual couples, but the friendships, rescue-team bonds, and running community details are a big part of the pleasure.
