Hymns of the West is Faith Blum's frontier family saga. It starts with a stagecoach robbery in A Mighty Fortress and then widens into a story about two families, the Brookings family and the Stuarts, whose lives keep crossing in ways they do not expect. The books are Westerns, but they are just as interested in household pressures, grief, courtship, and hard-won forgiveness as they are in outlaws and rough country.

The Brookingses head west from Illinois to build a horse ranch in Montana. The Stuarts begin from a very different place, a household marked by loss, isolation, and strained faith. That contrast matters. One family is trying to live out a steady Christian faith. The other believes in God, but not with the same depth or commitment. Much of the series tension grows from what happens when those two ways of living meet.

Each book shifts the spotlight to different characters. A Mighty Fortress follows Joshua and Ruth Brookings and the outlaw Jed Stuart in the wilderness after an attack. Be Thou My Vision moves to Anna Stuart, a woman whose life changes after loss and gossip draw her toward church life. Amazing Grace brings in Caleb and Maggie through a mail-order courtship after the Civil War. Lily of the Valley returns to Ruth as she juggles schoolchildren, friendship, and romance, while The Solid Rock turns Joshua into a Pinkerton detective working a dangerous case.

Place matters here. Blum uses frontier towns, stagecoaches, ranch work, churches, and the long distances of the West to keep pressure on her characters. Travel is slow. News arrives late. A bad choice can follow someone for years. Even quieter scenes, a schoolroom, a family meal, a prayer meeting, feel shaped by the reality that these people live far from comfort and easy answers.

The thread that holds the books together is providence. Characters keep trying to solve their lives through stubbornness, secrecy, pride, or sheer endurance. Again and again, they learn that survival is only part of the story. The deeper question is whether they will trust God, forgive old wrongs, and let other people into their lives. Romance matters here, but it grows out of character rather than flashy twists.

It is a Western series with room for tenderness.

The books work best in order because the emotional payoffs build from one title to the next, and side characters often become central later on.
