Hot in Chicago Rookies heads back to Engine 6 about five years after Hot in Chicago. Instead of the Dempsey foster siblings, the focus shifts to a newer generation of firefighters, academy grads Abby, Jude, and Sam, plus the people who shake up their carefully planned careers. They are talented, ambitious, and not nearly as cool under personal pressure as they are in a burning building. The books keep the same Chicago setting and firehouse camaraderie, but the energy is rookie nerves rather than old-hands swagger.

Being new to the job is half the trouble.

The through-line is simple and effective: these characters are trying to prove themselves at work while also figuring out what kind of life they want off duty. In Up in Smoke, Abby lands on the same crew as Roman Rossi, the single-dad lieutenant she kissed before she knew who he was. In Down in Flames, firefighter Jude Torres collides with Hudson Grey, a pro hockey player who was supposed to be just one anonymous hookup. In Hot to the Touch, Sam and Cassandra are forced into close quarters and shared responsibility after family tragedy blows apart the stalemate between them.

The setting does a lot of work here. Engine 6 is legendary, not just because of the fires, but because of the history hanging over it from the earlier series. The Dempseys are still part of the world, so the rookies are stepping into a place with traditions, ghosts, and a reputation to live up to. That gives the books a nice mix of fresh starts and continuity.

This series also opens the door wider than before. Like Meader's other Chicago-set books, it crosses into neighboring worlds, most clearly in Down in Flames, which links the firefighter stories to the hockey romances. The result is a series that feels connected without becoming tangled. You can read the books on their own, but together they build a small, lively community of firefighters, friends, relatives, and people who keep showing up when it matters.

If you like workplace romance with genuine stakes, this is a good place to land. The tone is hot, funny, and emotional, but the job never disappears. Rescues go wrong. Families lean hard. Grief and guilt follow people home. Even so, the series stays warm at heart. These rookies are learning how to do the work, how to trust themselves, and how to let someone stand beside them when things get messy.
