The Homerooms and Hall Passes series begins with a fun reversal of the usual fantasy-game story. In the magical realm of Bríandalör, brave young adventurers spend their days exploring dangerous places, fighting monsters, and collecting magical gear. When they want to relax, though, they play a tabletop role-playing game called Homerooms & Hall Passes.

In that game, they pretend to be ordinary American students.

The core group includes Thromdurr the barbarian, Devis the thief, Vela the paladin, Sorrowshade the Gloom Elf assassin, and Albiorix the wizard. Their imagined school adventures involve tests, class elections, cafeteria politics, and other everyday problems that seem bizarrely low-stakes to people used to dragons and dungeons. Then an ancient curse sends the whole party into the game for real.

The first book, Homerooms and Hall Passes, traps the heroes in the lives of eighth graders at J.A. Dewar Middle School. They have to learn the unwritten rules of Suburbia, pass their classes, and avoid blowing the game, all while trying to understand the curse that put them there. The joke is that these capable fantasy heroes can face a monster without blinking, but a five-paragraph essay, spirit week, or social embarrassment can leave them completely lost.

That fish-out-of-water setup carries the series, but the characters are more than a collection of fantasy types. Their different strengths, blind spots, and loyalties matter when they are forced to work together in a world where swords and spells are no longer easy answers. The books also use excerpts from the in-world game rules, which help frame school events like quests and foreshadow the kind of trouble ahead.

In Heroes Level Up, the group returns to the game world after signs suggest that Suburbia is in danger again. This time they are facing freshman year of high school, with new social groups, new rules, and a larger threat tied to an evil spellbook. The stakes stretch between Bríandalör and the world of the game, so the series becomes a little broader without losing its school-comedy heart.

These are quick, silly fantasy adventures with a lot of affection for role-playing games. Expect heroic quests, awkward classroom encounters, magical danger, and the ongoing question of whether the party can survive the most confusing realm they have ever visited: school.
