Series background & context

Homecoming is R. A. Salvatore’s three-book continuation of the Legend of Drizzt, following Archmage, Maestro, and Hero. It begins after the War of the Silver Marches, when Drizzt Do’Urden and his friends face dangers that peace on the surface hasn’t removed. The story connects dwarven ambitions, drow power struggles, and magical forces that threaten to escape anyone’s control. Its title also points toward a more personal question: where can Drizzt find a home after all his years of conflict?

For Drizzt, returning to Menzoberranzan means confronting the city he left as a young outcast. It isn’t a simple journey back to a place of comfort. The City of Spiders remains a center of competing drow interests, and its powerful figures have their own reasons for taking an interest in him. His ties to the surface and to his companions make that return part of a larger struggle over belonging and loyalty.

Archmage sets the conflict in motion as danger gathers beneath the northern lands. Gromph, the powerful archmage of Menzoberranzan, is part of a society consumed by rivalries and fear of losing influence. The possibility of calling on demonic powers makes these disputes more than local politics. What might serve one faction’s immediate needs could endanger everyone nearby, including people who never had a say in the decision.

Old enemies can create threats that none of them are prepared to contain.

In Maestro, the danger spreads through a demon-troubled Underdark while Drizzt heads toward Menzoberranzan. Another crisis draws Catti-brie and Gromph to Luskan and the ruined Host Tower of the Arcane. They seek a power capable of restraining the primordial associated with Gauntlgrym. The action therefore moves between underground cities, a dwarven stronghold, and the remains of a magical tower, with events in one place affecting the others.

Jarlaxle adds another layer of uncertainty through his attempts to maneuver friends and enemies into useful positions. Clever arrangements may bring rivals together, but they can also strain relationships that once seemed secure. This is a trilogy in which a sword fight is rarely the only problem. Magic, competing plans, and the limits of trust all matter, and even resourceful characters can misjudge how far a crisis will reach.

Hero completes the sequence while keeping Drizzt’s desire for peace, family, and a future at its center. Homecoming combines epic fantasy battles with the search for somewhere to belong. The three novels work as successive parts of one developing story, so beginning with Archmage gives the later dangers and personal questions their proper context. Readers already following the Companions will find their shared past shaping the choices ahead.
