Series background & context
The Companions Codex brings Drizzt Do’Urden and the Companions of the Hall into a new round of danger in the Forgotten Realms. R. A. Salvatore’s trilogy follows the group through a rescue mission, growing unrest, and a war across the northern lands. Friendship gives them a reason to keep fighting, but their shared history doesn’t mean they agree about every choice ahead. These are continuing adventures within the larger Drizzt story, with old relationships carrying real weight.
The group includes Drizzt, Bruenor Battlehammer, Catti-brie, Wulfgar, and Regis. Their reunion offers the comfort of familiar companions, yet the world around them has changed and old grievances still demand attention. Bruenor’s loyalties help draw the friends toward Gauntlgrym, where the immediate task concerns Pwent, his devoted dwarf companion. Pwent’s vampiric condition turns that loyalty into a difficult question: how can they help someone caught in such a curse?
In Night of the Hunter, a journey into the Underdark puts that question alongside dangers from the living and the undead. The friends must contend with a drow colony whose hostility to Drizzt makes their mission more dangerous. Underground passages and contested settlements give the adventure a different shape from an open battlefield. They can’t simply march toward their goal assuming that everyone they meet will let them pass.
A personal rescue soon sits within a much wider struggle.
Rise of the King brings the feud between dwarves and the orcs of Many-Arrows back to the forefront. Quenthel Baenre encourages conflict, a new orc king takes power, and the North’s long peace comes under threat. Bruenor’s wish to reclaim his throne is one strand in this larger crisis. The Companions must navigate their own unfinished business while enemies use old hatreds to push whole communities toward war.
By Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf, the War of the Silver Marches has stretched the friends across different fronts. Mithral Hall needs defending, while Hartusk’s forces threaten Everlund and drow interests complicate the struggle. Military aims and personal vendettas overlap, so protecting a city doesn’t necessarily remove the danger facing Drizzt himself. Battles test both the group’s ability to act together and the loyalties of those around them.
The tone is epic fantasy, combining underground expeditions, warfare, and the pull of long friendships. The trilogy moves from an urgent mission toward a regional conflict without losing its concern for the people inside it. Read Night of the Hunter, Rise of the King, and Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf in that order to follow how the threats build and how the Companions’ responsibilities grow.
